Importing hoyas to Canada
Comments (12)Ahoyaman, there's another hoya supplier in Canada, Pike Lake Greenhouses in Saskatoon, Sask. He has 22 types of hoya, and they are always received extremely healthy and well packed for shipping, but a lot of them are mislabeled. However, I've got everything he has, and have a list of what they should be named; send me an email and I'll give you the list. Flora Exotica's hoyas are also wonderful and very healthy. Dianne, I'd give him another chance if I were you, he tends to be very busy and can forget about promises. Just keep emailing him, that's what I do, and I get great service from him. Comments (5)Your friend in Ontario also has to get an import permit. You apply for these listing both the species you want to import and the state it's coming from. You also have to say where you are growing it, and if you intend to resell, where you sell to. You can list as many as you want on the form. It's something like 30 bucks, and the import is good for 3 years. While it seems a lot of bother, a lot of this is needed to slow down the spread of pests. Even within Canada there are limitations. I can't buy elm trees from Jeffries in Manitoba because Alberta is so far pretty much Dutch Elm disease free. For the last three years I couldn't bring firs in from BC. They are having a problem with adelgids on firs right now, and they want to keep it inside the BC boundary. Getting the phytosanitary certificate is a lot easier if the plants can be shipped bare root, or are grown in sterile soil-less media. phyto certs typically cost $25 to $40. Might be cheaper to mail your friend a gift certificate to a local nursery....See MoreMiele Warranty on USA products in Canada
Comments (6)I am also looking at purchasing Miele products in US. There are duties on German appliances imported into Canada. In my case, the American retailer will absorb the duties and transportation costs. I will still be responsible for GST and PST. I will end up with a savings of approx 30% for products delivered to Vancouver. It appears Ontario residents may be able to save more. Based on my conversation with Miele Canada, there were non-commital about warranty for Miele products purchased in US. However, when pushed, it appears that they concede that they will serviced the product. If I am incorrect, my thoughts are that 30% savings will pay for a lot of repairs. However, Miele products are generally reliable and believe that I will not need any repairs. Moreover, since my purchase will be made with a credit card (i have the addional safety of the credit card purhase protection plan) another option will have the appliance fixed thru my the credit card's insurance plan. You may want to review any insurance coverage thru your credit card carefully. Good luck in your purchase....See MoreImporting appliances from Canada to the USA
Comments (6)I think the duty at the US/Canadian border is different than when you're coming back from Europe. If you go over the limit, you pay duty on the entire purchase, not just the amount you went over (i.e., you're allowed $200 and you come back with 250 - you pay duty on 250, not on just 50). Also, some items are exempt from the duty free (which included stuff from France, so I was worried about my Staub pots) and in that case, you pay the entire purchase price as duty (so you've doubled your cost). Here is a quote from the linked official Dept of Homeland Security website: Increased Duty Rates Items from Certain Countries Under what is known as its "301" authority, the United States may impose a much higher than normal duty rate on products from certain countries. Currently, the United States has imposed a 100 percent rate of duty on certain products of Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, The Federal Republic of Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the Ukraine. If you should bring more of any of these products back with you than fall within your exemption or flat rate of duty, (see below) you will pay as much in duty as you paid for the product or products.
