Carpet vs hardwood "aging-in- place"--carpet or hardwood??
Comments (7)My mother is 85 years old and has Parkinson's, so she has trouble getting around. I am keeping her in mind with your question. I would go with a low pile carpet, if you were my parent. It is softer for when she falls down. Mom has hardwood in her foyer, dining, and halls, and although they are beautiful, they are mostly covered with throw rugs, which are a tripping hazard, but less slippery for her. She has trouble with getting a "grip" on the floor when standing up, and carpet helps with that. Wheelchairs will run grooves in a hardwood floor....See MoreDark hardwood vs lighter hardwood floors
Comments (61)When it comes to hardwood, trends are something to ignore! Why? Because hardwood is pretty much a lifetime purchase, and unless yours is damaged in some way, you're probably not going to replace it. So, light wood vs. dark wood, wide planks vs. narrow planks -- that stuff's all going to come and go. With that in mind -- as well as the very real concerns about cleaning dark wood -- I'll vote for a nice, neutral midtone every time. Not too much contrast, not too red, and (unless it's a beach house) not too pale. I think this is the wood that's most likely to give you good service and stand the test of time....See MoreMerpuah Hardwood Flooring - has anyone heard of this species?
Comments (2)I've never touched the stuff. I tried doing a quick search and found limited info. it says its Janka is at 1290 which is basically the same as Red oak (1260) The stuff is more than likely expensive, compared to Red Oak and probably closer to the price of Braz Cherry. With that being the case, the color does look neat, but for the Price, I would shy away and find something else that can be similar in color and a better hardness rating....See MoreArtisan Hardwood Flooring - has anyone considered or installed?
Comments (24)appreciate @SJ McCarthy agreed wood is wood. I've had cork before from prior owner, several residences ago and it is warm underfoot but not for us. Not sure if cork was maintained well or not but it wasn't in great shape when we bought that house so we had the discolored cork floor professionally removed and replaced with HW. Fridge water line and later on Fridge leaked in the back, needed wood floor replacement, not planning on wood in our next home (no Laminant/Engineered either after trying Laminant in our next residence (moisture caused swelling of the Laminant planks)). Engineered planks had cupping due to moisture by kitchen appliances....See MoreUser
