In ground vs containers

I know this requires a bold answer but I'm going to ask anyways.

Can it generally be assumed that a plant will do better in the ground than in a container, assuming that the ground has acceptable soil?

I know that containers have other added benefits like mobility.

I ask this because we have a lovely pot of flowers outside that I'm currently trying to ID. It has been there for years and it looks as if it's sitting in potting soil right on top of dirt, not buried in anyway....and the flowers on it are so lovely. I'm wondering what would happen if I simply took the pot away even though I can tell that there are roots that have already attached themselves to the earth below. I'm thinking maybe this will allow more of the root structure that have been contained to liberate themselves in a manner similar to the other roots that have been lucky enough to crawl through the holes at the bottom of the pot.

Thanks.
