Which David Austin (DA, english) roses last longest in a vase?
Comments (37)I have found the English Roses to be a disappointment as cut flowers. It isn't just the short vase life, a lot of them have weak stems too that can't hold the large blooms upright for flower arranging. I'm moving away from them because of these faults. There are a few exceptions. Of the David Austin roses that I've grown FAIR BIANCA (white) and EVELYN (apricot pink) did the best as cut flowers, but good luck finding them in commerce. The hybrid tea ROUGE ROYALE (red) looks like an Austin rose but does extremely well as a cut flower. I can get blooms that last a week in a vase. GOLDEN CELEBRATION (yellow) is great if you live in an area not plagued by black spot. To condition the vase water add a pinch of sugar and one or two drops of bleach. Don't forget to recut the stems under water in the sink and then immediately plunk the roses into the vase. If air gets into the stem then it will form a bubble, travel up the stem, and collapse the bloom. Not a big deal if you only want one or two days of vase life, but I grow roses as much for cut flowers as garden specimens....See MorePost up photos of your David Austin roses

Comments (24)I planted Eustacia Vye last spring bareroot from David Austin. Flowers bleached white and slow growing but that is only in 6 hours of sun starting at noon. Good health though and fragrance is yummy up close. Only two flushes but the second was barely a flush. In my situation I think it deserves another year at least. @Rose Paris What is your climate/zone like? I have Gabriel Oak coming this spring. I'm hoping for some nice color with fragrance and hopefully decent health....See MoreAnyone in Canada ordered directly from David Austin last year?
Comments (7)After my experience with Edmunds this year, I think that some vendors who are struggling with their stock and fulfilling orders are making hard business decisions that aren't great for their customers. I got my Edmunds order the first week of March (1-2 months later than our ideal planting time for bare roots). I received 5/8 of my bare roots in what I'd consider unacceptable shape. Two died to the bud union, and another two almost to the bud union. My gut feeling is that they sent me the crappier ones, b/c I'm in a warmer zone and getting them sooner, and these roses wouldn't hold for later shipment. So maybe they kept the better quality bare roots to send to the later customers. I didn't order from David Austin, but have read that they have struggled to fulfill their orders....See MoreUser
