Mac upgrade questions (from a PC person)

The lawyer I work for at home has a Mac at his home and needs to use
Safari 5.1. I don’t know if this is the latest version; it’s the only version
of Safari permitted by the court system for their website.

I’m not familiar with Macs, but I’m far more comfortable
with computers than he is, so I'm sure I'll end up getting involved. I’ve been poking around the Internet to see what’s
involved with the browser upgrade, and I’ve learned his operating system will
have to be upgraded as well. Apparently the newest OS X is called El Capitan,
correct? But I’ve also read that Safari 5.1 is available on OS X Snow Leopard.

I know the lawyer has the wrong (older) version of Safari,
so from what I’ve read, Snow Leopard is the upgrade he needs. I found out where
to purchase it. If he buys it, I’ll be asked to install it for him. I don’t
mind doing this sort of thing, but I’m Macs are not my thing, and computers are
not his thing. I dread getting into a
situation where I need a key piece of information from him about his computer,
and he’s clueless. I'm not exaggerating when I say he doesn't know the difference between an operating system and a file folder. But then, I don't know what most Latin legal terms mean.

I’m looking at this: “Note:
Some OS X Snow Leopard features require an Apple ID.” (Where would I find that?)

Also, I’m sure he has not performed any sort of maintenance on
the computer. Is there a way to empty the cache or delete other useless stuff?

Thanks for your help!
