Soil Test Back - Need Clarification/Advice

John Pence

Just got the soil test back for some raised beds, want to
plant some blueberries. Was shocked by
how high ph (6.5) was in light of having filled beds with 2/3 peat (the rest
compost). First problem I’m having is
determining how much acidifying material I need. I’ve got recommendations for “Sand”, Loam”
and “Clay”. My soil test says I have 36% organic matter, so do I use the table
for Loam?

Second question is what to use. I really want to get the plants in this
spring so I’ll have maybe six to eight weeks with daytime temps of 50 and above
which isn’t enough time for the use of elemental sulfur. I’ve got a fertilizer
recommendation of 1.2lbs of 34-0-0/100sq.ft. so I’m wondering if it’s possible
to get a mix of ammonium sulfate and iron sulfate to get my ph down to a level
the blueberries will tolerate (5.5?) and additional sulfur to eventually take
it down to 4.0/4.5?

If this would work, how do I calculate how much of each
product to use? I think I have the sulfur and iron sulfate down, it’s the
acidifying effects of ammonium sulfate I’m unsure about? Also, do I work it all in at one time? How much iron sulfate is too much (I’ve got a
reading of 40ppm Iron). I’ll also be
watering with water treated with sulfuric acid.
Don’t know if this will help to keep blueberries thriving until the
elemental sulfur takes full effect.
