Hardwoods on split landings - direction question
Comments (21)Now that building codes have limited the depth of the narrow end of a winder tread to 6 inches, the use of a single winder actually adds 2 inches to the overall length of the stair so there is little reason to increase the complexity and reduce the safety of a stairway by adding a single winder. As far as I can tell, the only layout advantage of a single winder compared to a conventional square landing (under 2009 IRC rules) is that it adds 6 inches to one end of the stair and subtracts 4 inches from the other end which might help a bit if the floor plan were tight on one level but not on the other. As far as headroom is concerned, the winder doesn't help at all if there's a winder in the stair above and when there is not one above any small advantage it might provide is offset by the need to start the stair 6 inches sooner. Starting another 4 inches sooner would allow the use of a square landing with even more headroom. In short, under modern codes, it would be a very rare stair layout that would benefit from a single winder tread....See MoreNeed help decorating a large stairway nook
Comments (7)It is three feet off the floor. Here's another pic showing where it sits relative to the stairs. None of our rooms are fully decorated yet. That door is the bonus room which is like a college and sport theme and the master bath is at the top of the stairs which has a country house sort of theme. The other walls of the upper floor have pictures of other vacations. The nook is pretty isolated from everything though....See MoreHow to furnish a stairway landing?
Comments (9)A bench under your window and lovely side drapes or a lovely roman blind. A bookcase or a table with lamp and big art in your larger space. A shallow armoire or even a small china cabinet can be repurposed. It could be an antique, new or craigslist. People are getting rid of large pieces like this to downsize. Do you have ceiling lights that could be changed to directional LED recessed lighting or can you add a slim profile track light in the corner?...See MoreStairway landing, before & after...
Comments (26)3katz, the cats use the space now more than they did before - at least for the time being. The photo I posted showing the ugly chairs was right after we moved the chairs to that location (they had been in our media room, but we replaced them with actual theater chairs). The cats pretty much stopped hanging out in that area shortly thereafter. They prefer to be where we are at all times, so they're either on various pieces of furniture, a cat tree or a cat bed in the living area, library, or media room. I'm sure once the newness of the cowhide rug wears off, they'll not want to spend much time on the "new, improved" landing. They are ridiculously spoiled; I mean, we eat dinner every night at the kitchen island with at least one tabby lounging on the island near our plates. Gross, but it is what it is -- they pretty much "own" us. ;-)...See Morejust_janni
