What is wrong with these trees?

My husband and I just bought 17 acres of woods we plan on using for hunting (him) and foraging/hiking (me). We were there today and I noticed this odd white, wide circle on tree bark. It almost looked like the bark was dried and kind of powdery, but it was not loose. It broke off a bit easier than regular bark but didn't come off in sheets or down to the wood. Looking further into the woods, there were a number of trees with this same wide (1 to 1 1/2 feet wide) white ring. I think they were white oak, but without leaves I find it very hard to tell. The last thing we want is our brand new woodland wonderland to have some disease kill off our trees. Any suggestions? Here are some photos. One higher up the tree where it wasn't affected, one showing the white bark and one with the group of trees.
