I'm so excited!!!
Comments (6)Both my prior engagements were cancelled...I pretended to be disappointed, but I was actually THRILLED to have more time to do things outside. So: Picked up 6 garbage cans full of free mulch from the township yard waste grounds and plopped in the driveway; Picked up 20 bags of compost and tilled them into veggie garden; Sowed lettuce, spinach, leeks, carrots and Swiss chard; Realized after much scolding that the dog (acquired in September) was not going to respect neatly sown beds; Ran to HD and picked up 2.5foot fence/post system; Installed fence; Went inside until sweating ceased; ate cold dinner standing at the counter; Dug up 100+ dandylions whoring themselves in the lawn (that snaketongue-shaped tool works great) Watched Terminator 3 & went to bed. Sunday: Dug out hose from the garage and attempted to fix broken sprayer thingie; Changed soaked clothes; Watered newly fenced-in veggie seeds while trying *not* to water neighbor's newly aquired kitchen cabinets which were on the other side of the fence; Assembled and installed garbage can screen ; Back to HD to get lattice to make into rose trellis for side of house (Spectra) Got DH to hold lattice while I climbed ladder to mark cutlines; Cleaned out gutters while I was up there; Amended soil and planted Spectra rose; Convinced DH to mow lawn; Put together lattice and mitered end caps. It came out great! I'll install that on Tuesday. Found excuse to lay on grass near hyacinths (weeding) It's amazing how one chore leads to another, isn't it?...See Morewhat a beautiful weekend
Comments (15)Carol, We went to 74 degrees yesterday and just before midnight it was still 54 degrees, although it eventually dropped to 32 degrees briefly . While the weather was lovely yesterday, the mud is not. However, clay will often stay wet forever, and then suddenly it is nice and dry and then in the blink of an eye it is too dry and cracking, so I think it will be dry enough here to plant onions when mine arrive here from the group purchase from Dixondale. That's assuming no more moisture falls, but our chances of rain on any given day are only 20-30% so I am not expecting much more moisture. I almost never plant anything directly on Feb. 15th (no matter what OSU recommends) but that is only because our soil usually is too wet. This year I'll plant potatoes on that day or maybe even today, but only because they are going into containers--well, some of them are, but not necessarily all of them. I normally watch the 3-day average soil temp at 2" and 4" below bare soil (mine is mulched, so likely a couple of degrees cooler) and this morning it is showing 39 degrees in that category. Of course, I always take my own soil temperatures and rely upon that actual data to determine if the ground is warm enough to plant, but normally my soil temps are not that different from Burneyville's. With our temperatures expected to run about 20 degrees above average all week, I hope to get a lot of work done outdoors. If OkieTim isn't busy fighting fires, (and, oddly, a fire dept. at the north end of the county is en route right now to a grass fire near Lake Murray which is NOT a good omen) we may start erecting the new garden structure that shall not be named....because every time we say we're going to start that project, it snows or sleets. It has happened three times, so that word is banned in our house until after the darn thing is put up and finished. : ) Now that the snow is gone and the soil is moist, little green winter weeds and poa annua grass are popping up all over the yard. The tiny bits of green are nice to see. We already had larkspur, pink evening primrose, Texas bluebonnet, Malva sylvestris 'Zebrina' and yarrow foloage up and growing before the 2 weeks of ice and snow arrived. Although they have discolored a little, they survived the wintery precipitation and exceptionally cold temperatures and look fine. I expect the early wildflowers will begin blooming quickly with these warmer temperatures. No matter what the calendar says, we feel like spring arrives on the day the first henbit blooms. Dawn...See MoreBeautiful Weekend!
Comments (9)Hi Janie - I found Geum 'Mrs. Bradshaw' once in Springfield but I can't remember where, maybe Lowe's. It was a few years ago and I don't recall seeing it since then. I'm ashamed to say I accidentally let it dry out in its little pot and die before I even got it planted so I didn't get to try it. Does it tolerate our summer heat ok? It's nice when the good weather falls on a weekend. I got a lot done, mostly mowing. The storms missed us too. We got very little rain but could see some lightening in the distance. My dog was sure the world was coming to an end as she always is when it storms so I didn't sleep well. It was 28 this morning when I looked at the temp! Not fair! I had no idea it was supposed to get that cold. I'm sure there were things I should have covered. Wish I had looked at the forecast yesterday....See MoreHave a beautiful weekend to all the rose lovers in here
