Introducing myself (cough cough)

Hi all,

My husband and I just bought a semi-detached in our favourite part of Toronto. Toronto prices are like Hollywood's, so we paid an ungodly sum for our compact, 100-year-old house, but we're thrilled with it. We lived at our previous place for over 16 years. It was the proverbial "great place to raise a family," but it was the suburbs, which is so NOT ME.

We took a huge chance when we bought this place, because we made an unconditional offer (the only way to get into this neighbourhood) and we hadn't sold our other house yet. Cleaning up for showings and hearing people's feedback ("no granite kitchen counters? Think I'll pass") was a lot more stressful for me than I would have imagined. I feel very grateful that we ended up selling our place in 10 days and didn't require bridge financing or other loans.

The only snag (and reason for the cough in the title of this post) is
that I've developed allergic asthma in response to the previous owners'
cat. I'm on a bunch of meds including oral steroids, and we've taken
several steps to rid the house of cat dander, short of pulling out all
the rugs (which would be hugely expensive and inconvenient). I've read
that cat dander can linger for up to 6 months, so I may be in for a long
haul.

I've been enjoying reading and learning from other people's posts and hope to join the dialogue.
