TV--The Middle and Modern Family
Comments (13)Lindsey, I saw this on Patricia Heaton's Wikipedia page: "On February 29, 2012, Heaton made several negative public remarks against Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke, joining the controversy surrounding the law requiring insurance companies to cover contraception. Following criticism for her remarks, Heaton apologized days later." I get weary of people behaving badly, then apologizing. I wonder if she ever gets tired of playing the beleaguered housewife, first in Raymond and now in The Middle. I get a kick out of both shows. In Modern Family, Gloria is so funny. In the Middle, there was a scene where Axel was trapped in a library and he did a little solo bit by himself. It was quite impressive, and I think he's a good actor....See MoreArticle: Set design for the 3 homes on "Modern Family"

Comments (6)I read Dan's question about the stiles as being rhetorical - you don't ever see stiles with the grain running sideways because the long pieces of cabinetry and furniture go with the grain, not against it (unless of course you're trying to use more material than necessary). To my eye, it would look strange and unsettling. I have mocked it up in my woodshop but have never wanted to build a door that way. True Shaker style shows vertical wood grain in both the door stiles and the face frame stiles. To insert a door panel with horizontal grain would make the cabinet surface look busy and interrupted. Horizontal grain on doors is a more contemporary look, and it does not fit with the more traditional Shaker profile. If slab doors don't go with the style of your home, then horizontal grain in cabinet doors will probably not fit with it either. All of that said, do what you love. If you're trying to make your kitchen integrate with the style of your home, consider that horizontal grain in Shaker cabinets will make quite a statement....See MoreThoughts on living room to end vs in the middle of house?
Comments (14)We are remodeling/adding on to an existing small 1970's ranch that will include adding on a main living space on the end of the house versus the center because I don't have to mess with as many exterior walls that way and because that location will provide windows on three walls to give us a panoramic view of our farm/scenery from the living area. The room will face east on the backside and south on the end and west on the front side (dining space). I'm hoping for lots of natural light that way as the house feels very dark right now for lack of windows. I've been perusing new house plans trying to get a feel for how the exterior can look and you're correct that living spaces in that configuration are nearly impossible to find....See Morelily316
