Woe is Me! What To Do?
Comments (37)Is it a vague feeling that you're not supposed to spend this kind of money on something for yourself. . . .? A lot of us have been raised to be generous with others and frugal about what we need. Wow. This has been such a really been a very thoughtful, provocative thread! I think we all know that being a TKO is a pretty nutty proposition. But to be TKO and living single is not just nutty. It's plain scary at all times! With no one at home to really sort out these tough decisions close at hand (and no TKOs among my family and friends no matter where they live) you guys really are the ones I look to for advice and support, especially when I have a big problem. So, from those of you who have at come at this from a business/legal perspective to those of you have tested the pyschological/emotional decisions underlying all this, I gotta say once again -- thank you! Each and every opinion that has been registered here --even if I haven't specifically referenced it in my responses-- is worth something to me. So, let me be crystal clear that I love and want this Aga 6-4. But Lascatx is right-- although I've finally arrived at a place in my life where I can actually make such a purchase, it still feels strange to me. Even if my mom was not suffering with moderate dementia right now, I most certainly would not have consulted with her on the wisdom of this decision. I would not dare to risk the scolding from her (a depression-era survivor) for being extravagant and wasteful in the design of my kitchen. In fact, I can even hear her saying: "Why do you even need a new kitchen? That 40 year old kitchen you inherited and which you have been living with for the past 20 years was just fine the way it was!) LOL! Still, whether it is extravagant and wasteful or not, I confess that I want it. Plus, now at midlife, I finally have the means to make it happen. In all likelihood, I am going to go ahead and buy this Aga 6-4. I got a tremendous boost of encouragement from Claybabe, when she wrote me offline to tell me how much she enjoys her own 6-4. Madcow, even though you own the incomparable Aga traditional cooker, I am also encouraged by your unswerving devotion to the product. And, Holligator, your post about your new Legacy just made me smile even more. In trying to gauge customer satisfaction, against the occasional backdrop of negative comments from Aga bashers, there is nothing like hearing the product praises of people who actually own and use Agas. At this point, the key for me will be studying the terms of the warranty and whether I can find a trustworthy and competent local service person who is truly knowledgeable about the product in the next week or so. When I phone Aga North America on Monday morning to discuss my situation, seeing how the customer service rep handles that call also be critically important I must say, if I get even a hint that they aren't prepared to be fully responsive and attentive to my potential customer concerns, then I very well may drop the whole matter, deny possession, refuse to make the down payment by the end of the month and dispute the sale altogether. I sure hope that doesn't happen! Again, I'll be sure to keep you all posted. Go Giants! (Sorry, Pats fans, I just couldn't help that last one):)...See Moreshow me (or tell me) the background to your range hood!
Comments (14)twodogs, I thought the same thing. Boy did I have a story, complete with a nail biting deadline of Thanksgiving, receiving damaged packaging, torrential rain (ok, not torrential, after all I'm in Ca.) but rain enough to prevent climbing on the roof without a safety net, last minute drive through rush hour traffic and torrential rain (really!) to see a craigslist external blower the exact same model as my damaged one (what are the chances of that?) and cajoling my contractor in to braving the rain and working the day before Thanksgiving to install my blower on a slippery wood shake roof. I spotted him the whole time. So, since the op is just looking for stories about range hood backsplashes, and I don't have one, just plain sheetrock at the moment, and probably for many moments to come, I guess I don't have anything to contribute. ps, I saved $800 on the blower!...See MoreTis the Season to Say What You Mean...Or Just Be Mean...Or...
Comments (34)Well, today is going much better. (Of course I am probably jinxing myself.) I went to the library and spoke to a few acquaintances who all remembered me and none of whom told me I had ratty hair or pimples. The Kindle Fire session went more smoothly, thanks to Frances I think I have figured out a thing or two or three. I think the problem is just plain old slowness. What I took for nonresponse is just plain slowness. I need to wait...wait...wait...wait a little more...voila! Being used to lightning fast responses on my work and home computers, I have become spoiled. It's not that bad, but it is definitely slow. And my two Kindles work differently - my old Kindle can receive books just about anywhere but my new Kindle Fire can only receive books if it has a wireless connection. Except for library books, which are a whole different animal. Yes, it is a learning experience. Anyway, I am tired of Christmas, not the spiritual beautiful part, but the I-don't-have-time-to-be-nice-to-you-because-I-have-better-things-to-do part. I will be glad when the holidays are over and my friends don't hang up on me because they are busy and stressed. I don't have the busy stressed part, because I pretty deliberately eliminated it quite some time ago. For instance, we don't exchange gifts in my family as a general rule. We all agreed quite some time ago that we all have too much stuff. But today is beautiful. It is snowing lightly and looks gorgeous. I'm so happy to have some snow that does not come part and parcel with a huge and ferocious storm. This is lightly falling, moderate temp, no wind, only half-an-inch expected snow. And yes, this is all tongue-in-cheek, I'm hope I have generated a bit of laughter!...See MoreOrchiata: Suitable for 5:1:1 and/or gritty mix?/Turface woes
Comments (3)Hi CK, I also live in Singapore and have just rebooted my container gardening efforts using the knowledge and advice that is so generously offered by many on GardenWeb. I am using Orchiata Precision Grade (3mm - 6mm) as the pine bark component of Al's 5-1-1 mix. I have also been following the advice from Al's fertilising containerised plants threads and have been getting really positive results (I am growing peppers and tomatoes and a few herbs). A couple of things worth mentioning: Trawling back through the container soil posts I get the feeling I should have gone with one of Orchiata's larger grades (e.g. 6mm - 9mm). I think I might have gotten confused about the best size for 5-1-1 vs gritty. In any event the precision grade seems to be working well for me at the moment. I noticed that Orchiata treat their bark with dolomite. I had added dolomitic lime to my mix prior to realising this, however it doesn't seem to have negatively impacted my plants at all. Anyway, I hope you are have lots of fun and success! Please feel free to get in touch if you would like to compare notes about container gardening in Singapore! Kind Regards, Brad...See MoreUser
