What are your recent experiences with Hortico?
Comments (11)I placed an order for 4 hard-to-find Austin roses (Cressida, English Garden, William Morris, and Claire Rose) in early fall and requested November delivery. The cost of the roses was $14.99 and the shipping was reasonable, around $10 for all 4. Like you, I have read that a number of very experienced rose growers who frequent these forums, have had terrible experiences with orders from this company. Specifically, receiving mis-labeled roses and/or specimens that were either dead (or nearly dead) or very small and of sub-standard size. My expectations were not terribly high, but I was willing to take the risk, hoping that even half of the roses sent would be viable and correctly labeled. I received an email in November, stating they were having some minor problems in shipping their November orders. The roses arrived in early December. I was very pleased with the condition and size of the plants sent. They don't look like the many of the roses produced in the US, which are grafted onto Dr. Huey rootstock and with thick canes (perhaps 1/2 inch to 1/4 inch thick). The roses sent are grafted onto Rosa multiflora rootstock and have twiggy canes that are mostly in the 1/8 to 1/4 inch range and around 12 inches long. The number of canes in my specimens are in the range of 5 to 10 canes per plant and are all plump and loaded with axillary buds that are on the verge of breaking now. The roots are also of smaller caliper and are very plentiful. The length of the roots averaged 10-12 inches, but there were some roots 15 inches or longer. The plants are of the size that I have received from Pickering Nurseries (another Canadian company) that also grafts onto Rosa multiflora. I know that some have problems with roses grafted onto this rootstock, but I have had nothing but favorable results in growing roses on this rootstock in 2 locations in CA for over 10 years. I have a book that has detailed, closeup photos of the leaves, stems, and flowers of 3 of the 4 roses that I ordered. The prickles/thorns of one of these specimens (Cressida) do not match the photos in the book (nor my memory of this rose which I have grown in the past). I have contacted Hortico explaining my concern; they responded the next day, stating that I should plant the rose and take a photo of the flowers and send it to them. They said that they would replace it if it wasn't the right rose. I do know that many others have had poor experiences with this company in the past, to the point that they have stated that they may never again order from them regardless of more recent reports of favorable experiences. I can certainly understand their frustration. I am all but certain that all my specimen, now in 5 gallon pots with good potting soil, will survive. It remains to be seen how many of them will turn out to be the correct variety, and how the company will resolve the problem if some turn out to be mislabeled. At this point, I am pleased with my experience and hopeful that most will be of the correct variety. Only time will tell if my optimism is justified....See MoreRecent experience with Viking rangetop/range?
Comments (1)No one wants to bash Viking, even those of us who have been though endless rounds of service calls and replacements. Your desires are what they are. So it's up to you to judge whether you will be lucky enough to beat the average experience. I started with a Viking kitchen and it all will eventually be replaced, possibly save the vent hood. Last week I called the local rep and left a message -- I had a minor question about my fridge. No response. In the past few years they have been more responsive than earlier. Unfortunately with these purchases many things which seem important before are not afterwards when a whole different set priorities sets in. Shouldn't be that way but it has been IME. Every brand has complaints and yet some have fewer than others....See MoreAny Recent Showplace Cabinet Experience?
Comments (9)Thanks for the advice, Jakuval. (Correct, traditional overlay in my kitchen.) However, I don't want to start messing with these adjustments and making things worse: when I call the dealer and his installation crew back in, they'll say I messed it up. Yes, 1/16" is indeed noticeable to the eye (so, you can imagine the 3/16"s!). I immediately emailed the owner and itemized all of the drawers that were off. He came the next day, took one look, and said, "Hmmm, I don't see any problems here. What's the problem?" Geez, did you not read my detailed email, or are you trying to be funny? He made me point out all the different areas where the drawers didn't align (whether due to size or installation). His comment: "Seriously?! Your eyes can actually see that?" It has been a very rocky road with our dealer. ckahmah: Despite our regional manager being called to the house for a meeting, to lend what advice he could give, at the end of the day you'll need to communicate with SP through your dealer. They/SP don't like to get between a dealer and the customer, as your/customer's business relationship is directly with the dealer. We actually did have huge issues with our appliance cabinet. Turns out either the KD mis-measured the space or she didn't review the oven specs carefully enough. KD told me the 'universal' cabinet shown in her catalog wasn't specific enough. After we rejected their/dealer's proposed remedy (their guy would basically take a saw to the entire cabinet, hack it apart, and rebuild it in our space), we said no go: we didn't pay for a hacked up cabinet to be installed. I realized this was the right call after I double, triple and quadruple checked the specs: the cabinet ordered wasn't even the right width. A new one was re-ordered to spec, on their dime....See MoreRecent Viking Range experience ? (post 2015)
Comments (33)I see you already made up your mind, that’s fantastic! I just wanted to say that we bought a dual fuel 60” viking professional range in 2017 as we got a fantastic deal on a floor model. We are quite pleased with it, and it gets a lot of use as we have a larger than average sized family and I cook a lot in bulk. We had a bit different experience than most... we knew the appliance store we bought our range from was cutting off business ties to Viking (the story we were told was that they had been the exclusive distributor in the area for many years, but the owner got pissed when Viking started selling through other nearby stores so he wanted to sever ties with them... ok... whatever... we were just happy about such a great deal on a range we hadn’t even thought about getting originally because of the outrageous cost) anyways, our range and hood was their last Viking item in the store and we knew we weren’t getting any service stuff done for it through the store, they made that clear. Our range isn’t full of electronics, it’s quite basic in its design, and my engineer hubby felt confident that he could 1) repair things himself if needed, and 2) rely on friends/family we have to help manufacture replacement parts if they stop being sold. So we aren’t a typical customer. LOL! Anyways, we did deal with Viking for a repair right after the range was installed... but it was nothing to do with the functionality of the range. A little metal trim piece on the front of one of the oven doors was loose and sagging a bit. Viking sent out a repair man at no charge... after fiddling with it for a while he determined he couldn’t repair it. Vikings solution was to replace the entire oven door. We didn’t get charged a dime for anything... but the repairs certainly didn’t happen in the quick time frame you mentioned. Granted, this happened over a year ago. The initial visit from the repair man was within a few days. The oven door replacement didn’t happen for several months... but my panties weren’t in a wad simply because I could still fully use my range, the issue was a minor cosmetic one. It did make me wonder if that timeline would leave me very patient if it had meant I couldn’t use part of my range though... I hope this helps anyone reading through this thread for further information on Viking. I really love my range, best I’ve ever had... prior to this, the most uppity brand I’d ever had was kitchen aid (and we always had great experiences with their customer service as well and still have many KA appliances.) but my Viking range is nicer to use than my KA cooktop or double ovens were. I much prefer the Viking infrared broiler, I adore my griddle, the burners are pretty much what I had been used to except there’s more of them with a 60” range, and most of all I love the painted surface compared with everything being stainless steel... it’s much easier to keep looking clean for longer. We have their graphite grey, and it blends in very nicely with our other SS appliances....See Moremcnastarana
