Your computer start-up page

What start-up page do you like? I like something with some news. Not too interested in celebrities.

Just figured out how to change it on Windows 10.

I just have plain old Google. I have netvibes which I have set up to have all the news and information and various sites I like to check regularly. You can get your own page free and set up all your favorites in one place too. It gathers feeds and whatever else you choose.

I have CBS News. Some of the others have too many pictures, too little text, for my taste. I dislike the links that are to videos, tho. I can read something far faster than following a link. My DH is using Yahoo, which I think is all fluff and celeb.

I have about 3 tabs open up. The last ones that I had open. The Kitchen Table and the Yahoo Log-in page for sure.

The option to remove or change a password is available by going to the Control Panel and selecting User Accounts. If you are the one and only user of this computer, I'm making a guess that you are talking about the administrator account and that you will always be using that account. Of course, that is your decision to make but by doing so there is a greater risk of damage to your computer should you ever be infected by a computer virus or other malware. You should consider creating a user account (which does not have the elevated privileges that an administrator does) and use that for your normal computer use. If you choose to use only the administrator account, I suggest you become very familiar with the workings of your antivirus program and the available tools to combat malware (many of them are free) and how to use them and update them regularly. Sooner or later you will get attacked (if you haven't already) and fixing these problems is sometimes very difficult if the infected account has elevated admin privileges.

if it is his regular pc it is windows 2000 I do believe. Shax can you get to safe mode at all? if so you can run malwarebytes in safe mode, it sounds like it could be something from that update that did not agree with your system. I just don't know much about windows 2000. You could try to get a linux live cd and stick it in the cd drive and see if it will boot to the live cd and using it you could at least see your windows partition and save your files. Use Ubuntu Live CD to Backup Files from Your Dead Windows Computer Geek to Live: Rescue files with a boot CD oh yes you were using a registry cleaner??? hum well that could definitely cause some issues, do you happen to know if that one you used created a back up of your registry? Not that it will help very much if you can not get to boot.

Hi jean_mi_z5, Reports inconclusive to me. It's showing a lot of system file crashes, but those crashes can be caused by 3ed party files / drives causing the Microsoft drivers to crash and I don't see any 3ed party listed. If you're having a lot of blue screens and it appears you are, I strongly recommend you post at the link provided. I think I've made things worse. I downloaded malwarebytes and super anti spyware which did scans. Nothing but tracking cookies were found. Anyway,and this actually made IE worse than it was,but I updated to IE 9 and now when I click any favorites they just sit and spin. So,IE is basically useless to me now. I'm thinking I could maybe use my cd's that I ordered when I first got the computer over eight years ago to put the computer back like it came but seriously I'm thinking at this point I've messed it up so bad that only getting a new computer is my answer. Really wanted to wait until the new Windows 9 or 10 came out. Now I think some aspirin is in order for me. LOLOL Really appreciate all of you guys/gals for your suggestions.

I use MSN for my home page, I have for YEARS. I don't care for change....HAHAHA!

My home page is my email at Hotmail my main account. On some devices I have Google as the home page. I usually always have a few other tabs open too.

Arkansas girl, do you have that AdChoices at the top? I know you can opt out but it's so complicated. Do you have Bing for searching?

A home page is a setting in a browser. It has nothing to do with the version or even the type of a PC's operating system, also has nothing to do with the type of PC or device.

To change it, look for a setting after you've started your browser. The location is slightly different for each.

Google/search for your browser and homepage setting, with a search with these words as examples:

Firefox change homepage

or

Chrome change homepage

I like Google too, it loads fast and then I use my bookmarks to go where I want.

I just have Google too...plain and simple but it does what I need. I used to have a big Yahoo spread with the news and so on, but changed it because there were always some article that would catch my eye and I'd find myself reading it instead of doing what I went online to do.

I like a blank page. That way, I don't get distracted, when I first go online, but can go to where ever I want to. If I click on "home", I go to my weather page.

Right now I am using cnn.com so that I can scan the headlines first thing in the morning. I don't like that videos auto turn-on, though. And apparently it is a feature you can't turn off for this site.

Graywings, that's why I kept shopping around. Hate it when videos start automatically. I keep my sound turned off except when I want it. Try CBS. Not bad.

I have Chrome set to open up where I left off when I shut down, so the only thing resembling a home page is the Google screen I see if I start a new tab.

My computer runs 24/7, less occasional reboots. I have it open the last pages I had open and I have several pages (TV logs, a couple weather pages, OneTab, email page and my "home page") pinned. I made my own start page with links to common places I go. This developed over the years. I added images for radar, weather forecasts, etc and has since grown to a large page. I often have a number of pages open. For instance when I go to some YouTube pages I wind up opening up others that are linked on that page. I open them in new tabs so I don't lose the other links of interest. Then close them down. If the computer locks up or something, it'll open the last set of pages and I can continue.

One of the best things I did was spend the time making up a page of links. Now I tend to use OneTab more than the link page but it still has the old links and info on there so it gets used quite often. I never liked the bookmark/favorites setup on browsers. Works great for me.
