Which cabinet size would you prefer?

This is my kitchen plans (Thanks Lisa_a) , I have 54" on both sides of the range. I will not have uppers on the range wall. All drawer base cabinets will be from IKEA. Would you prefer:

1. one 36" and one 18" base cabinets?

2. one 30" and one 24" base cabinets?

It depends. What do you plan to keep there? I think I would go with 36 +18 so the 36 inch would be for pots (either 2 15 or a 5-10-15) and then 18 with at least 2 5's for cooking utensils, spices, etc. Also think about storage for potholders/trivets.

You need 36" for pots pans.

Because of where I live and am retired, I am indoors mostly in the winter when it's dark and gloomy and later at night in the summer, I would choose the best for at night. If I was a working person and home mostly evenings (and weekends, but would be out doing errands and yard work in the daytime on weekends) I would choose the best for nighttime. If I stayed home during the day, lived where it was bright and sunny, and had many daylight hours to enjoy it, and/or was an early to bed person, I might choose the other.

Ice, thanks for posting your lovely kitchen. I struggle with visualizing ideas, so it is really helpful! Funky, if we go with additional lighting I think you are right that the sconces are going to work better with the look and small space. It also makes a lot of sense to add a little additional light - it can always be turned down - and to have a couple lights that are task-specific or for mood. The artwork idea is so fun. I'm going to have to think about this! I also have that evil powder room wall, if I could find the right decoration. There's something terribly pleasing about having begun the kitchen planning with the thought, "Oh my, where am I going to put all my stuff? How is this ever going to work?" and to be drawing toward the conclusion and be thinking things like, "My storage plan around the range should be nothing, or art. Bbtrix, Thanks for hunting out this pictures for me. The style you pictured and the placement might look really good in this situation. The pulls are a kind of a strange color, "antique pewter," so maybe hard to match. The faucet is chrome and lighting fixtures in the dining area are currently dark bronze. So ... we're already getting patchworky, for better or worse. Here are the pulls - first is the stock photo, and the second is a photo I took when investigating flooring. (We're probably about to order the brown tile on the top.) The pull looks more silvery in direct light:

Assuming you're building a custom home and not picking from a selection of established floor plans, I'd personally pick a lot with (1) limited east/west exposure, and (2) the front door facing south (or possibly west, if you desire an attached front-facing garage, since I'd want a garage to block western heat). My reasoning for number 2 is that I like my living spaces to face the road so that my private sleeping spaces face north (my family sleeps better on the coldest side of a house, and I want all bedrooms together). So, a lot depends on what your priorities are. :-D If the home is a tract/production one, pick your floorplan first, and then determine which sides of the house you want to face which directions, then pick a lot accordingly.

I have a smallish kitchen; I have 24" drawers on one side of the range, and 34" on the other side. The 24" is nice for cooking utensils - I would not want any less.

The correct answer for YOU depends on what you will be putting in each drawer. Mark out each size with masking tape, and place your items inside that space. See if you have more items or space left over!

I feel like if I go with 36, the 18 will be useless. I don't have that many pots and pans but have small kitchen appliances like rice cooker, Breville oven, vitamin, slower cooker, dehydrator, air fryer, and juicer. What's the best way to store those? They sitting on the counter right now.

Figure out what you'll put in there. The way the drawers are divided could make all the difference. I love the idea for pans and oil I saw in a reveal today http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/3692743/big-reveal-ikea-kitchen-reno?n=24 Definitely think about vertical storage of things like lids, baking sheets, pizza pans, etc. Then think about how many large diameter pots you have and how much space you need for them.

We have our pots in a 30" and they fit fine. I would prefer the 30" + 24" as I think it would be more balanced visually and more functional.

Can I ask -- why the 15" tall cabinet to the right of the fridge? Is it meant for brooms/cleaning supplies? 15" will very narrow for food storage (especially since Ikea doesn't do the full pullouts like they used to). We have 21" and I wish it were wider. The interior pull-outs take up a lot of width.

My pots are in a 33" drawer and it is more than big enough. I have a couple 18" cabs planned for my new kitchen, but whether it is something that would work for you would depend on what you plan to store in them. Mine will be perfect for plastic wraps, utensils, oils, vinegars, etc.

Thanks Everyone! I will go with 30 +24 for visually a more balanced look. Also, I did some quick measurements, My sad 5 pots will all fit into one 24 cabinet. Hahah, two of 30 and 24 would be more than I ever need.
