Joists direction changes in kitchen doorway

We're having hardwood installed in the kitchen of our townhouse (20 yrs old) and after taking up the vinyl the installer pointed out how the joists run front to back for 7 feet; then side-to-side for the remainder of the townhouse. There is no support underneath the area of direction change because the garage is underneath the kitchen. They'll install the hardwood perpendicular to the majority of the joists, but for the front part of the kitchen it will be parallel. There's been a dip/squeaking in the area of direction change that's been worsening over the years. The installers say they can just grind down the subfloor edges where there's unevenness. Any advice?
