I need help with heat and air installation quotes

I need help deciding which one of these quotes, if either would be appropriate for my house. I have an older home that is 1200 ft.² and not very well insulated. I live in the southern part of the United States and I have an installation quote for a 14 seer 3 ton 60,000btu 80% single stage Goodman brand unit for $5700. I also have a quote for a 14 seer 3 ton 80,000btu 80% single stage Trane brand for $5300. I know so little about this and I want to get a good system that will heat and cool efficiently so your help is greatly appreciated

I doubt very much you need 80,000 btu furnace (or even a 60,000) or a 3 ton A/C if you are in the south (especially the southeast). Make sure the equipment is properly sized. Prices vary across the nation so those quoted seem middling. Where exactly are you located (city, state)?

Thanks for your help. I am in Arkansas... Summer's can be in the 90's to 107 during the day and 40's to 20's in the winter. I want the system to be able to cool and heat efficiently and to not use excessive energy. Would a 2 ton be sufficient? Is there a large benefit of a 2 stage, multi speed unit over a single stage, single speed? Is 80% good enough or should I consider 95% for an additional $3000? How about the brands... is there a benefit of one over the other? It's a big investment and I want to do this correctly. Thanks again

Not too much more to tell. It is a family owned company and basically an individual came to our home, did a walk-through and wrote up a proposal for these systems (didn't discuss any other models, take any type of measurements etc). One thing I do know is that this individual is very familiar with our development and has installed many systems in our area (I think he even lives nearby), so he may already know what size we would need. My home is about 2300 square feet if that helps. He wrote that the G71MPP would be $5300, an additional $100 for the thermostat, another $200 for a MERV 16 air cleaner, another $300 for the April Aire 400 humdifier, and another $300 to add another return in the basement. So...the grand total on the heat system would be $6200 before rebates, etc. Then the air conditioner would be an additional $4300 or $5500 depending on which one I get. Seems insanely expensive to me, but was curious if I was just out of the loop on pricing, or if this really is a lot. Thank you.

The price for a 286B 2 ton system seems fair because it the top of the Bryant line (Evolution), it also depends on the little things they have to do of the install. You may ask them for a quote on a non communicating system which has the same 2 speed compressor 226A FV4C-2 - variable speed air handler Thermidistat and ask them about a compressor sound blanket. That system doesn't come with one and is a decent add on. It has a small rebate on it also and will qualify for the tax credit. Right now with the rebate, makes the Evolution a good time to buy by bring the price down a few hundred about the non communicating 226A if that's what you want.

Baldloonie- I think it's just to run ducts out to back room which is only electric heat. The room is right off the room with the furnace. Ryanhughes- The 10,000 rebate is part of the NJ Clean Energy Program. It's a rebate a lot of people aren't familiar with but it's great. It's actually a reimbursement for saving energy for buying new higher energy efficiency products. You can be reimbursed for 50% of the cost of the work up to $10,000 plus have an opportunity to finance the balance at a 0% interest rate for up to 10 years if you reach certain efficiency requirements. That's what I thought. But the same company quoted me Goodman (13+ variable speed)plus the Fujitsu ductless for $20k. Upon further review, I see that the ductless is $5800 of the total! Are they very difficult to install? I got another bid today from a GC for 2 units...one in attic and another in basement for $22K PLUS $5900 for a ductless unit! Almost $30000 for a 2500 sf house??

What size and efficiency do you have now both AC condenser and furnace? And how did they perform as far as meeting your home's comfort?

I currently have a 19-year-old Goodman 10 Seer, 3 ton system with 75,000 BTU furnace. The ductwork is either 8 inches ( main house) and 6 inches ( BAs). In the winter it doesn't seem to heat as well as I would like in the gas bills are very high. In the summer it cools fairly well but not great.

OP needs a load calculation and top to bottom inspection of her ductwork system, size, insulation properties, and leak test.
