Need advice on Lennox air/heat quotes...please!

I was quoted $4300 for the XC14 air conditioner, $5500 for the XC21 air conditioner (still deciding which on to get) and $5300 for the G71MPP heat system. Are these in the ballpark from what others are seeing? These quotes seem high to me...

We live in NJ, btw!!

High cost, limited information presented in the bids. So that's anywhere from $9600 to $10,800 for the new system. You can do better than that (in the $6-8k range for a nice system). I would not agree with any proposal that doesn't give me more information on what's involved, what's included, work spec, etc. Perhaps you condensed it when you were posting the information. How did they determine the size units they would install?

Not too much more to tell. It is a family owned company and basically an individual came to our home, did a walk-through and wrote up a proposal for these systems (didn't discuss any other models, take any type of measurements etc). One thing I do know is that this individual is very familiar with our development and has installed many systems in our area (I think he even lives nearby), so he may already know what size we would need. My home is about 2300 square feet if that helps.

He wrote that the G71MPP would be $5300, an additional $100 for the thermostat, another $200 for a MERV 16 air cleaner, another $300 for the April Aire 400 humdifier, and another $300 to add another return in the basement. So...the grand total on the heat system would be $6200 before rebates, etc.

Then the air conditioner would be an additional $4300 or $5500 depending on which one I get.

Seems insanely expensive to me, but was curious if I was just out of the loop on pricing, or if this really is a lot.

A few additional pieces of information: -It is diagnosed as being the outside TXV. Sorry to have omitted that information before. -I asked the tech about the possibility of him having overcharged the system, having read that non-starting is sometimes a symptom of over-charging. The tech insisted that was charged to the correct amount. -a drier was put on after he re-charged (from the puncture repair). There was not one before. -in re-reading his notes on the receipt, I see where he indicated "system shuts down when high pressure reaches 400 psi." Presently, the tech 'reset' the board, giving us A/C on the condition we don't switch back to heat. He said switching to heat would shut down the SXV again. It buys us some time to get better educated, I guess.

Quote 1: Does not qualify for the tax credit, if that's what they're leading you to believe. Good outdoor unit, but it bothers me they are not including a variable speed air handler. Quote 2: This company may just have a lower overhead and overall lower prices. If your realtor has had good experience in the past, I wouldn't have a problem. But I would suggest stepping the outdoor unit up to the Amana line (subsidiary of Goodman), which is a more premium product to compare to the other units you've been quoted. In general I would avoid Goodman/Amana because I think there's better out there, but if it's what fits the space and qualifies for the tax credit, then it would be worth considering. The Carrier units that would qualify are huge physically outside. Quote 4: Sounds like they're oversizing the equipment--not a good thing. I would avoid. 800 sqft. in our area shouldn't require 2 tons, and if the old 1.5 ton did the job in the past, that's what I'd install. Also they are not informing you that if you register the units with Trane within 60 days of install, warranty should be 10 years on all parts. And yes, a humidifier should give an added sense of warmth to the air and hence allow you to set your thermostat lower.

OK, heres the info that I was given on both units: Goodman: 1-MBE1600-Air Blower 1-CAPF3743C6-Evaporator Coil 1-ASZ14036-3.0 Ton Heat Pump Condenser 1-Digital Heat Pump Therostat RUDD: 1. Untra Series Heat Pump UPQL-JEZ 1. UHKA Air Handler Digital thermostat It says install 15 seer HP 3ton R-410-A split system. Now whether or not my house needs a 3 ton or not I left that up to the dealer/installers. But my house was built in 1940, is about 1500 square feet, with NON-insulated windows, with non insulated exterior concrete walls. I do have quite a bit of insullation in the attic. This is probably the reason for the higher ton heat pump. That and trying to get to the tax credit. Both dealers claim that their units qualify for the $1500.00 tax credit. If not then I'm makin me a trip to Sears and just replace my 24,500but window unit with another and call it a day.

The fan shroud is likely what you're talking about. Came loose from the screws holding it to the top of the outside condensing unit. (Ah the price of moving manufacturing to Mexico.) When the fan shroud came loose it likely got caught up in the moving fan blade of the fan motor and likely at some point stopped the fan motor. When the fan motor stops and the compressor is running and there are no pressure switches the compressor will scream to high heaven's "Somebody Please Help Me" Just when the compressor thinks all hope is lost... the OL kicks out. (Over Load) When the OL kicks out, this shuts off the compressor. You can bet your golden griddle cakes he's gonna be hot. So hot, the AC repair man probably spent a good amount of time cooling it down so he could restart it. PS: the over load is there to protect the compressor. That is his job and only job.

I'd suggest getting another estimate or two for comparison of prices in your area. They do seem high.

I also live in Central NJ and I believe we were quoted by the same HVAC installer as the Lennox Furnace and A/C units seem similar. XC14 $4500, G61MPV $4800, included Aprilaire 400 Humidifier and CS5000 Comfort Thermostat for free. Using existing ductwork.

putting price aside for the moment, it always amazes me how dealers quote/install and homeowners accept an inexpensive thermostat that cripples the capability of a nice high end furnace like the Lennox G71 or Carrier Infinity MVC. You see it everyday-sheer stupidity/incompetence.
