Whats wrong with my roses
Comments (5)It can happen in the cold and in the heat, but I noticed mine happen when there is a lack of water to the plant combined with extreme heat. (Periods of hot days with no rain while the bud is developing). Heat stress seems to be my biggest culprit, but if it rains a lot and the roses get plenty of water it seems to reduce the problem so maybe try giving them a little extra water. Of course the rains bring cooler weather so it could just be the rest they get from the extreme heat on those rainy days that makes them return to normal, but a bit of extra watering cant hurt. However, cold can sometimes dry out roses too which is why perhaps you see this with both cold snaps and heat waves. Either way they'll return to normal when wonky weather returns to more pleasant rose-growing conditions. My biggest culprits are Kordes roses and of my Austins only Abe Darby has this problem on occasion. Richard's Rose is one that gets this often too, it is still small but rarely has a normal bloom. I'm giving it time as I've seen it be magnificent in a garden not to far from me. Papi Delbard also does this to me in the heat of summer....See MoreDoes anyone know what's happened to "Botanus"
Comments (2)I hope your begonias have turned out well! I was disappointed with the results of my Botanus begonias. Okay, they were nice quality tubers upon arrival and quickly had sprouted into life, but two of the three have proven untrue to name. 'Angelique' was correct, though 'Pink Delight' wasn't, it's suppose to be a cascading fragrant variety, but instead was strongly upright with THICK stems and huge NON fragrant flowers. The yellow cascading is also instead a strongly upright plant. So, there went my anticipated display for the shaded front entrance of the house!...See MoreDoes anyone know what this rash is on my roses?
Comments (8)The best cure for black spot is GROW BLACK SPOT RESISTANT ROSES! Black spot resistant roses are coming out from the rose breeders more and more each year, from: bushs like the Knock Out series, ground covers like the Drift series, floribundas like Poseidon, to even hybrid teas like Pinkerbelle. That's your best bet to grow roses having the most pristine foliage without having to spray them. May I respectfully ask you to examine the underside of your leaves for spider mites. I do not see strong evidence of a black spot infestation in your sample leaf. Black spot, it may be, but usually several black, roundish, fuzzy-edged spots of varying sizes are present on a rose's leaf, often turning the leaf a bright yellow before it drops off. There are several strains of black spot, though, each with its own visual appearance. The most common black spot strain's symptom is as I just described. An individual spot being up to about 3/8" diameter, and adjacent spots do grow into each other making for a much larger 'community,' spot to 3/4" across, but usually not circular in its shape, but irregular. If it is a fungus, looks more like Cercospora leaf spot because the spots are not black, but tan/gray in color, particularly at their centers. However, the difference between the two, cercospora leaf spot and black spot, is a difference without much distinction. Both are harmful rose fungi. Athough in my garden, black spot is more deadly. BS can kill a bush at the worst, and at the least, weaken it until it performs very poorly. Cercospora is a little less deadly. Moses...See MoreDA bareroot roses have started to bud!
