I got seedlings, now what?

So last October I posted about forgetting seed in the fridge. And was suggested to see if any seed are alive, heh.

Well, turns out a couple of them were very alive. Now I have seedlings going in my solarium! Temps out there usually hover between 33-42, with some below freezing and above 45 dips. They are in a south facing window.

So now what? Shold I let them just keep growing as they are, or start plucking them out of their paper towel base to put them into their own plugs? I've had to tear open the top layer of paper towel a bit to help the seedlings, so I'm not too sure how well or not the roots are growing through the bottom layer.

An update.. I went ahead and pricked out the eight biggest and sturdiest of the seedlings, and put one each into 1x1" square cell pots. Doing so, I uncovered more sproutlings poking about. If the first ones I pricked out do well, I will keep doing this pricking out thing.

Nice that they are doing well. I have no words of wisdom to add, as I have more hellebore seedlings outside than I can handle. I never grew them inside. What exactly are they?

That's a good question. I have two different kinds of seed starting trays. Both say to leave them in the trays for 6-8 weeks so you should be okay. I am new to seed starting and just repeating what I've read through thread searches. I think the growth slows down a bit after the first jolt of growth. At a certain point, I would think it okay to turn off the heating pads. Tomatoes can survive as low as 50F, so unless it gets colder than that, I would turn it off. This might also "slow" the growth a bit. I live in Houston so as soon as mine are ready, I can safely put them in their pots. I don't grow in ground here. The soil stinks, and as a teacher, I can't find time to work the soil when it needs to be worked.=0( Good luck!

that's why while some have zone envy (7/8) because we have a couple of warm weeks in January and have tons of seedlings - we suffer around this time because our temps are now and have dropped as low as 15 and sometimes with snow.. I have tons of seedlings already up with three sets of leaves. I have a system when that happens, special blankets, etc., but I NEVER plant out into the garden until I am well into spring - even not until April 15th. You learn by your mistakes -(although I do plant out my dianthus because they can take the cold well) :0) Carrie

Hi Moonie, Here is the link to my root pruning... I sure hope this helps... Your tree is looking great to all of us Plumeria Lovers!!! Some of mine are so ugly, they are "cute.." : ) I have one tree "Pele" that looks like it went through a nuclear meltdown when the temps were Ahhh... very hot in the greenhouse last year.. Won't mention any names.. Cough, cough... He is still in the dog house for that one.. : ) I now have the temps under control.. This was the only one that looks bad.. So, your tree looks great to me too! : ) You are so right about our temps here.. We can have cool temps and then extreme heat. That is why you need to be careful to acclimate your trees in the spring. It sounds like you have a great handle on yours!! Good Luck and keep us posted!! Rachel, You are so kind to say.... caponata - now that I've got it, what do I do with it?

I make zucchini caponata (zucchini cubes, fresh tomatoes, celery, bell peppers, onion, sliced black olives, capers, basil...), but eggplant is more common, and eat it with wedges of pita bread. It's one of my mid-summer garden delights! I like it for lunch (with pita bread and a wedge of good cheese), but it can also be served as an appetizer (crackers or small wedges of pita bread) or a side dish with fish. Caponata isn't "one" thing and there are many recipes using a long list of ingredients. -Grainlady

I got no idea what they are. Last spring I asked around as to when it was time to ask around for seed. I ended up getting a rather large packet of miscellaneous hellebore seed from a member here. They kind of adopted me and gave me seed. If I recall correctly, they are mixed single bloom.

Thank you gdinie :) I hope so too. My family kind of shakes their heads at me about this. But I tell them my schedule for this bed to be worked on and implemented in for this plant phase is 2018, so starting these seeds now makes perfect sense. I got a lot of gardening going on all the time, so planning out some beds a year or three ahead like this is actually kind of nice and relaxing.
And really.. for a bit of friendship, postage, and patient time- I will be getting what around here would cost potentially several hundred dollars or more in landscaping costs. And the friendship, postage, and patient time are far better spent for me.
