now what i got lots of seedlings and a foot of snow is coming

OK first year and I'm am thrilled that I have seedlings in many of my containers, BUT.....

we are expecting a northeaster coming up the coast and dumping up to a foot of snow on my babies! What am I to do? Do I cover them? I know I don't bring them inside but is there anything special I should do???? help I don't want to lose them.

What kind of sprouts? That can make a difference. Hardy perennials and hardy annuals will probably be fine snuggled in the container. If you have some tender sprouts like zinnias, I'd give them a little more protection, maybe put in an unheated garage or cover with a blanket.

And where do you live?

It was awfully weather since we gone to Indianapolis, IN (to cleaned up my mother's rental storage) last Thrusday and came back home again Last Sunday afternoon. It was cold and flurries all the times when we were there. I was expecting it would be nice sunny and warmer in Arkansas, but I was wrong. It was so cold and cloudy when we came home. Yes, its been quite mild. I do recall a year (pre-garden journal, or I would look it up) shorty after we started gardening that was very mild (1997?1998?) up until the middle of January when it proceeded to drop down to Zero and sub zero temps for the next month or so...I recall it because there was new growth on the roses in my rose 'hedge' in January. Even as a farily new gardener I knew that wasnt good. Lost most of those roses that year. Anyway , we may be able to see the hellebore hyrids, sometimes nicknamed 'Christmas rose' actually bloom at Christmas this year. A hellebore that usually blooms in Spring is sending up a flower shoot now. Another hellebore , foetidis, which carries its flower shoots over the winter and blooms in early spring, is trying to bloom now.....While acceptable in a genaerlly mild climate zone like England, I cant imagine that January and February will stay this mild. May take a look at the snow crocus and other eary spring blooming spots as well. May also put out some slug bait, the foxgloves look like they are being chewed on :)

Jeff, I don't usually divide chamomile since it reseeds so easily. I will cut it back really, really hard once it is about through with a flush of flowering and it will then regrow and reflower. The method used to propagate chamomile depends oh which type you are growing. If it is English Chamomile, you can propagate it via seeds, division or by layering. If it is German Chamomile, you usually propagate it by seed only. I treat dill the same way as chamomile, cutting it back hard if I want to keep it growing and in flower, or let it go to seed if I want the seeds for cooking. I have never heard of anyone propagating it via division or cuttings, only by seed. Sage is easy to grow from cuttings. I have never tried to divide it from the rootball and don't know if that is how it is usually done. But, if you see clumps forming away from the main clump you can dig the little clumps up, separate them from the mother clump and replant them. Cut back the topgrowth of the divisions a little to compensate for the shock of being dug and transplanted. You can divide many perennial plants by cutting the rootball in half, but you will always have to cut back the top a lot to compensate for the digging/cutting/replanting. I usually just let the herbs grow into huge monsters. I tend to let them reseed, and then I just dig up the tiny seedlings and put them where I want them. I think you are pampering these too much. Remember, P. incarnata is a weed, and can grow in very poor soil. Throw them in some dirt. Seriously, you should have no problem moving them to bigger pots. If they have been in a very humid environment, you may want to gradually expose them to drier air over a few days. I made the mistake of tossing some fruit into my compost bin last year. I now have hundreds of these things coming up around every plant that got compost this spring.

watch out for those zinnias - they HATE the frost. i bring mine in if they have sprouted this early but usually don't do tenders until mid March (for that reason). We are expecting snow also here in NC and I was going to do some annuals early but changed my mind. Good luck - and GOOD covers!

Dumb question;

if nothing has sprouted, we don't need to bring anything in or cover it, right?

Not dumb at all!
But yes, as long as nothing has sprouted the containers are fine, like the post-carrier - wind rain or snow.
Or freezing temps.
It's only after the sprouts emerge that we must do this dance - with - cover or uncover.
My poppy sprouts I cover at night and uncover during day. I suspect they'd be fine now uncovered at night, but I am a worrier.

that's why while some have zone envy (7/8) because we have a couple of warm weeks in January and have tons of seedlings - we suffer around this time because our temps are now and have dropped as low as 15 and sometimes with snow.. I have tons of seedlings already up with three sets of leaves. I have a system when that happens, special blankets, etc., but I NEVER plant out into the garden until I am well into spring - even not until April 15th. You learn by your mistakes -(although I do plant out my dianthus because they can take the cold well)

Wouldnt you know it!We hardly ever have enough snow to amount to anything in my area.This morning we awoke to 8 plus inches.That just blows my mind.All my little seedlings I have been gloating over are now covered.But they are all perennials and hardy annuals so Im hoping for the best.
