Great Trees or Great Views....what would you choose?
Comments (27)This thread took a bit of a snarky turn, but it is obvious that it started when someone who doesn't understand the botany of the Texas hill country started defending "cedars." Whether you detest or defend "cedar" (really a variety of ashe juniper) in this part of the country is a touchy subject, LOL...they can be decent trees when they get large and do provide some wildlife habitat...and current thinking is they probably don't take as much water as was previously thought. However, they are also opportunistic scrubby little bushy things that will choke the land given the opportunity...this land was not originally covered with this stuff and clearing some of it gives the oaks, elms, redbuds and many other interesting and valuable native trees and shrubs a chance...also lets the native grasses recover in areas that were originally grassland. Now on to the original question. ;~))) aggie, I would choose the view if you think it will stay nice. I hope nothing happens to your majestic oaks, but here on the edge of the hill country we have been through some freak windstorms that twisted some of our gorgeous oaks and elms off and the occasional ice storm that coats everything can do a lot of damage to our beautiful oaks (which are also brittle trees.) As other posters mentioned..things happen to trees. If your view will not be endangered by development, etc. you really can plant trees where you want them (and where they benefit your house siting.) There are quite a few trees that are either native or very well adapted here which will grow pretty fast with a little supplemental well water...I am talking good trees like bur oaks, Monterey and other white oaks, some elm varieties, etc. You may also get a good breeze on the edge of a bluff which can be a big advantage in this climate!...See MoreWhat Wall Color Would Look Great in My Family Room?
Comments (19)Thank Sims Luxury Builders! My DH has agreed to let me choose the sofa color so the first choice is charcoal gray. The problem I am having is we want a sectional and it has to be relatively small (about 100 x 70) with a left side chaise. Ideally we want leather upholstery to stand up to our kids. And...... it needs to be "cool" and not a typical oversized ugly sectional. All of these "conditions" is leaving me with not too many choices unless I get it custom made. I can find black sectionals that fit all of this better than dark gray. Dark gray seems to be mostly fabric and not leather. If I can convince DH to go for hard wearing fabric then that may work. I also have found places to make a custom sofa for me with prices comparable to ready made. DH is a bit leery of this though (quality wise). On another note, our drywall guy has extended his start date twice now. Suppose to start today and now supposed to start Monday. Comments (9)Look at Soumak rugs. I had numerous Soumak rugs (most by Kalaty) in our last home - laundry room (photo here), breakfast area, living room, dining room, foyer and a guest bedroom. Several doormats coming in from back veranda also. Several are still used in our new home. They are not as soft as wool, but they are not scratchy. 3 dogs, 4 cats, 2 grandchildren and 1 DH, and they still look brand new. They come in all sizes. They repel dirt and liquids wipe up easily. How big is your room? It looks like you could bump up to a larger rug, say a 9x12 or a 10 x 14....See MoreWhich Windows do you prefer for this vaulted Great Room??
Comments (42)Jslazart and sprink1es have given you the best advice. You need to consider orientation of the windows (N,S,E,W) before picking windows and narrow your choices accordingly. If they face west, you won’t see the TV in the afternoon, if east the tv will disappear in the mornings. If south, you’ll welcome the warmth in the winter but will miss mid-day TV. If north, the TV will be fine, but the room will feel colder in the winter. Dependent on trees and potential blockage of course....See Moresjhockeyfan325
