estreya- This is going to sound super stupid, but is the trellis the white structure outside the front door? If so, all of the houses in our developement have one and it is attached to the house and made of wood and painted white. I unfortunatly live in a cookie cutter community and ALL of the houses look the same in my development. I live in So Cal and this was supposed to just be a starter house but 7 yrs later with housing having gone up up up we could not afford to move and are still here. I also vote no shutters. Please don‘t take what I’m about to say the wrong way : ) ... Yes your home is old, and all the other homes in your area may have shutters....however your home was never designed to have shutters. You can tell by the placement and design of the windows. While shutters can act as eyebrows for your windows, the original purpose was to “shutt”. If visually you can’t shut and open the shutters it will look off, and therefore, wrong. Bellow I illustrated what your shutters would need to look like if they propperly fit your windows: See what I mean. Every shutter needs a window, but not every window needs a shutter. Your home won’t look “off” without them, they will look right. Your windows on your first level are wood, leaded, and original- let those shine! Now, as far as trim and door color...I’m pegging you home between 1910-1920....possibly early 1930?? When choosing trim and door color, go historic. I went and did some quick research for you on archive.org. You can also find historic colors at any local paint store. If you design your homes exterior in the era it was intended, it will never look dated. Yes, many of these colors seem bright (not everything was pastel back then as we usually think...) Also remember that your colors will be outside, bleached from the sun. Always go darker and more colorful than you think. As much as I love dark stains, painting the cabinets may be the way to go. White, Grey, Blues are what is "in" right now but they're still nice neutral colors. My issue with this kitchen is what appear to be 30" wall cabinets and larger than life ceiling height in comparison. it makes the space seem short. lighter cabinets and maybe a darker wall color will close this gap. A horizontal backsplash will also help visually make the space longer, making it appear bigger.

Hi smurfette36- Your credenza is lovely! If you are comfortable viewing your television with it placed there, then by all means, leave the credenza right where it is. Can you put up some photos of what the other end of the room looks like? Also the adjoining room? I also think the room desperately needs some more color, even if the color is black. You can do this with a new rug, or you can keep the rug and add the color with art. It is difficult to do a gallery wall. It can easily look like clutter, or like one can't afford a larger important work. But in the end, one actually spends more on the sum of those several smaller pieces that aren't anywhere as nice as the one larger piece you could have purchased that would have made your heart sing every time you saw it. I favor a hand knotted Oriental rug such as a Persian of any type. They last forever and never go out of style and go with any furniture type and color. And they are less expensive than most people realize. But you can certainly keep your current rug, and just turn it 90 degrees. You can get some throw pillows in whatever color way you like, but for sure, please get them with interesting textures such as nubby knit, velvet, corded trim, etc. Or your "color" can be black, and a couple of pillows can be an animal print with black, such as a leopard, and your art print can be a black and white print of anything you like. I would replace the lamp in the corner, that one is too small and old fashioned. I would not get one with a colored base. That is too restricting, because if you decide to change things up in the room, you are stuck with a lamp in a specific color that will cost a pretty penny to replace. Get a sturdy lamp in the appropriate size in a classic shape. Also, the plant in that corner is undersized, please keep your eyes open at tag sales for a big, big one, either a kentia palm or a fiddle leaf fig.
