Nice article! I have lots of different butterfly gingers (hedychium), globbas, and a shampoo ginger. I didn't know they were edible. I also have a lot of Turmeric (curcuma longa) growing in my garden now. I planted the whole front border of one side with Turmeric a few yrs ago. It has returned reliably so far after winter dormancy. I also grow grocery store ginger (Zingiber officinale) which does pretty well here and is hardy.

I planted turmeric last summer, but it stayed too wet and rotted. The local Earth Fare store sells the tubers, so I'll try again in the spring.

I bought a few lbs of turmeric off ebay when I was getting started. It was from Indian Grocery or something like that. They sent nice plump orange tubers and it was over 2 lbs. So pretty good.

It is an interesting article, I am growing a few gingers in my garden and I really like the turmeric that I planted a few years ago, I started with just a little piece and now have a full row besides harvesting for myself and sharing some with others. I like the idea of wrapping food with leaves like the banana and ginger sounds like a good choice, I also had food wrapped with canna (achira) leaves.

I like the idea of being able to eat the shoots of edible ginger and then eat the roots too. It's like a twofer! I'm definitely replanting turmeric in the spring. It's got such pretty leaves, and I need things that don't look like food to plant outside the wall.
