IKEA Slipcover Sofa-Anyone Know Anything?
Comments (11)I'm going to be the negative one here. My Dh and I bought the Ektorp sofa and matching chair when we first got married. We needed something inexpensive and stylish and thought the price was right. IKEA's delivery service was horrible. We took a day off from work the day the delivery was supposed to come and they never showed up. On Day 2, my FIL spent an entire day at our house and again, they didn't show up. On Day 3, my FIL was at our house again and at 5:00, when they still didn't show, we called up screaming. If we hadn't called they wouldn't have shown up. It left a bad taste in our mouth but at least we got our furniture. However, the chair was in our house with limited use for 1 month and the leg sank in. The sofa pilows were a crumpled mess. The slipcover was dragging on the floor, not sure if it just didn't fit or if the cushions sank. I wasn't expecting much but it wasn't even worth the little amount that I paid. The frame was like cardboard and the cushions were the cheapest foam imaginable. Slipcovers faded after washing. After 1.5 years, the sofa looked beat up and we had to get a new one. My advice is to invest in the Mitchell Gold, unless you're planning to switch out your sofa in 2 years. Its a good sofa for a kids playroom (which is where my sofa ended up while the chair went to the trash) because then you don't have to worry about it but I wouldn't recommend it for a living space. The price point isn't so appealing once you notice that its not even worth $100. I think that's why there are so many of them on CL. People buy them and then realize they need to get something better. Others may have had a better experience but I learned my lesson. If I had known then what I know now, I wouldn't have spent my hard earned $$ on cheap junk. It's almost better to live with hand me downs until you can save $$ to purchase quality pieces that will last over 5 years. Just my $.02. Good Luck with whatever you decide....See MoreDoes anyone have the IKEA svanby beige slipcover?
Comments (5)Thanks for the link Kmcg...I already follow Melaine's blog so I have seen the sofa in her family room. Her wall color is more tan than mine which is what makes me think the slipcover might look dingy next to my walls which are more of a cream color. newdawn- don't come over to my house if you are tired of the slipcovered look cause all of my furniture is slipcovered!!! Comments (21)Great story Woodie! I guess I should order some swatches before I make my final decision. Also consult with SO. I know he is going to hate #4, he doesn't like "cozy granny" style at all! Although I know he likes that wine color. But he likes beige and brown too. Wondering about the linen one, there's some logic in using a slipcover that ANNOUNCES it is a slipcover, but I'm not sure if those one piece ones would be a continual sloppy problem. We don't have kids around to play fort on the couch unfortunately, but I lounge around on it almost every day when I am at the house. Even more so when I get a TV and stereo set up in there. My other grandmother had a chair with a slipcover, but that was just one big chenille thing with fringe on the edges which she had to continually tuck in and adjust. It had zero fitting though, and she didn't use anything to keep it tucked in. The grandmother that this couch came from (and the rocker in the room) had all her stuff slipcovered, and you would never know it. Even the rocker was padded and slipcovered to death, I had no idea it had the heart shaped carving on the back. The seat, back and arms were covered in padding tied down. That was the best rocker for playing pirate ship on! Anyway maybe grandma made those slipcovers herself, she was an inveterate seamstress. I vaguely remember big tacks with clear plastic knobs on them that I got in trouble for popping. Also maybe some pins when mom took the covers off. It's a 40 year old memory so I don't think it will get any more clear....See Moreektorp chair & slipcover info, please!
Comments (2)I've had Ektorp chairs and couches with various slipcovers (right now I have the Blekinge white) for years! I have a messy family (teenagers, cats, dogs, a husband who eats on the couch daily) and wash my slipcovers about once a month. They wash beautifully and, if you put them back on when they are damp, slip back on easily. Just make sure the slipcover you like is washable! (For light furniture the Ektorps are really well made, too. Our first ones survived multiple military moves, including overseas, and they took a beating every time!)...See Morenosoccermom
