long narrow side yard...
Comments (3)I have an idea: I would do a repeating design. Find two trees that would do well in the spot and remain relatively small - you don't want them to overgrow too much and then you'll have a mostly shade area versus a nice sunny area. Then find a geometric pattern garden design you like (a circle with taller plants in the middle, a square with a repeating design, etc.) For full sun, I'd stick with safe plants that are very easy to grow for your geometric design - catmint, day lilies, sun loving hosta (there are a few) - you can get these for cheap at Home Depot or Walmart. THEN - I'd do a pattern in the long path: Geometric Design w/Perennials * Tree * Geometric Design w/Perennials * Tree * Geometric Design w/Perennials. Leave the area beneath the trees as all grass or as all Ivy. Simple. Whatcha think? It'd be beautiful to walk along the two sidewalks and see butterflies and other of natures beauty... You can do it! Comments (5)Hmm, the leaves do seem to resemble X Chitalpa more than Catalpa...? "ÃÂ Chitalpa tashkentensis is a bizarre hybrid between two unlikely parents, the Catalpa bignonioides, the cigar tree, and Chilopsis linearis, the desert willow. The result is a great, relatively drought tolerant small tree that flowers from mid summer until early autumn." http://www.greatplantpicks.org/plantlists/view/1734 Here is a link that might be useful:...See MoreTrying to identify bush w/ purple berries
Comments (3)You may well be correct, Esh. I checked out my native and the white non-native one, and the leaves seem to fit what you said. However, I also went on line and found a great variation in the size of the native Callicarpa leaves! I also found photos that seemed to show some space between the limb and actual berries, i.e., a slightly longer stem. I guess that is why photos can only do so much. We would need to key it out from an herbarium sample or in life. The small bit of research did give me something to do after dark, since I am not a big TV fan. We have had great weather recently for walking outdoors. I even worked a little by planting a few new things! Unfortunately, I also cut a trillium rhizome in half. Maybe I will be lucky and it will make two of them, the "decapitation" I have read and heard about....See MoreAngled peninsula in long narrow kitchen
Comments (5)I think an angled peninsula would look unique and interesting if done properly. What is the clearance b/w the peninsula & pantry in your drawing? With seats there, I hope at least 48". BTW...the locations of your range & sink concern me a little in that if there are two people working in those locations they will be "bumping elbows". I agree w/Rhome, post a to-scale drawing of the "empty" room and then tell us the pertinent information (appliances, goals, "wants", "needs", "do NOT want", etc.) If you haven't already, I recommend you read the "Read Me" thread. It discusses drawing a layout as well as other useful info. Here is a link that might be useful: Thread: Read Me If You're New To GW Kitchens!...See Moreblakrab Centex
