cactus dying/rebirth help, please
Comments (7)There is a small chance that it is natural ageing but it is more likely rot, I think. Is it spreading? If the base rots it usually becomes soft and the plant falls over, but with some fungal disorders the plant remains upright. If it is rotting, it must be cut at approximately half height (the tissue must not be discoloured, it must be cut higher up than the brown area on the skin), dried and rooted as shown in the link. I would wait for several months before potting it (this would be a large wound), but that seems to depend on the climate. The shape of the top shoot is not normal. It indicates that the growing point of the main stem is damaged. That is not too bad, it is probably easier to cut off and root than the major surgery needed for the main stem. It is also thinner than it should be, which could be related to root damage. It does not look like typical etioliation, even if I suspect that it would hav looked bette if it had been grown in stronger light....See MoreMy office cactus is dying! Please help me save it
Comments (8)That looks like a large terracotta pot. It might have a drainage hole. However, it looks too big and I can't see the kind of soil in it. I'm guessing that isn't a pot full of quartz sand. However, if it is a large pot full of quartz sand then I can see how that might be difficult to correctly water to keep the plants healthy. The two spiky plants in the back look like Hoodia. They are Asclepiads rather than Cacti. They look unbothered about anything. The front left plant might be a dark-leaf Aeonium. However, I'm not sure the stem should be that dark. The stem might be rotten. The center red ball cactus was grafted on to a root stock and the root stock died. Unfortunately the red ball cactus can't be saved without grafting it on to another root stock. The dead root stock is a common problem with that plant. I agree the P. afra in the back right and Echeveria in the front right look like they can be saved. You might have to cut the long stem off the Echeveria and reroot the top. If those were mine I'd prefer to plant each one in separate smaller pots. Group plantings in a pot bought at a store often don't work long term. In this case the plants might look like they need to be watered but have been watered too much, or been moist too long, and lost the healthy functioning of their roots. Without healthy roots plants can look like they need water even when the soil is moist. Some people asked if the dish was purchased "as is". I'm guessing they meant to ask if it was purchased as a group of plants in one pot rather than ask if it was sold marked as is meaning no guarantee the plants were healthy. If they were sold with no guarantee then I wouldn't bother trying to return them. Sometimes I buy plants like that....See MorePencil cactus dying, help!
Comments (4)As garrett said above, it's starving for sunlight. Without sunlight there's no photosynthesis. Without photosynthesis, the plant starves to death. Cacti, especially Pencil Cacti need full, direct sunlight. Place it outside....See MorePlease Help! - Pencil Cactus (Euphorbia Tirucalli) with Dried Stems
Comments (12)I’d love to find out what happened to your cactus. I bought one in the summer and within a month it started dropping pencils. I thought I was water it too much, so I cut back to every three weeks and added a grow ligh. Then it started throwing off an alarming amount of pencilS. I took it to the store I bought it from and they exposed the roots. It only had a couple leading me to believe it what a cutting that wasn’t rooted enough. They told me to keep it in water to grow roots, that did nothing. Finally after a month and a half I planted it in well draining soil and within two weeks the plant turned grey and died. The owner of the store felt so bad she gave me a huge one of her own to replace it. The only problem is she used normal soil from a company called “Good Dirt.” It’s mostly peat. I feel like I should repot it in Al’s gritty mix that I made, but I’m gun shy after losing the first one. Please note the giant rocks are only a temporary solution. The plant is so top heavy and the soil is so light I’ll be fixing that problem when I repot....See MoreSara E
