Grout or Caulk?
Comments (5)From the TCNA site: When do you use caulk instead of grout? Technically, anywhere there is a change in substrate or backing surface such as the joint between walks and floor and wall joint, caulk should be used in place of grout since these surfaces move independently of each other. However, it is important to recognize and make the end user aware of some important points. Often, installers use grout in place of caulk for these reasons: The caulk may not exactly match the grout color. Even when the caulk exactly matches the grout color when installed, it may not match six months later (caulk will "age" differently from the grout). Caulk will need to be maintained more often than grout. Mold may grow more easily on caulk (except caulk treated with mildewcide) than on grout. Acrylic caulks break down in horizontal wet applications. Silicone, urethane, or multi-polymer caulks are better choices but can be harder to apply. However, when grout is used in place of caulk, the grout can cause structural and aesthetic problems. The grout will crack allowing moisture to penetrate.Where the grout is sufficiently strong, movement in the walls, floor, or countertop can damage the tile.Grout cannot hide corner cuts as well as caulk. In summary, caulk is the better choice, but the customer needs to understand its limitations. https://www.tcnatile.com/faqs/45-sanded-grout.html...See MoreEpoxy grout really worth it?
Comments (18)Thank you to everyone for all the info. Very helpful! I met with the bathroom designer yesterday, and he mentioned using Mapei, the Ultracolor Plus, I think. In my notes on all my readings, I have noted that Mapei Flexcolor is (my interpretation) an "acrylic" grout, which sounds pretty good. But the Ultracolor appears to be a "premium cement" grout, which sounds not as good. I just don't want something I'm going to have to seal periodically. Any comments on how I am interpreting this information? On a second topic, I asked about waterproofing the shower. He said the Durock is waterproof, and any water will drain into the pan, and so a waterproofing membrane is unnecessary. But what I've read contradicts that. I read a bunch of info on the John Bridge forum that said it is NOT waterproof, and vertical surfaces should ideally have waterproofing, and horizontal surfaces definitely should. So I will bring that up with him. When I asked about it, he said it cost extra and threw out the figure of $900, I think. That seems like a lot to me. Is there any way to estimate how much it should cost to put waterproofing membrane in a 4 x 5 foot shower? Overall, he seems like a real quality guy, so I'm surprised at this disconnect on the waterproofing subject. Thanks for any info!...See Moreepoxy grout vs unsandrd grout
Comments (10)unsanded traditional good quality grout . why do people think they need epoxy grout in a kitchen. it is for almost commercial use and commercial use...swimming pools/fountains.....etc. If you have a commercial kitchen or caterers in regularly for large parties...maybe....but not even then, really. Elton John may have it around his patios and in his kitchens for all his entertaining , you could maybe assume....See Moreis white mosaic tile for shower floor a mistake or a regret?
Comments (15)Thanks for the article - just read it - very helpful tips! Considering the "cons" - the yellowing...If I don't have any sunlight (no windows) in any of the bathrooms. If it says yellows over time exposed to sunlight, guessing it's the UV, do you think it would yellow over time if there are no windows in the bathrooms, just from regular blubs? the appropriate surface...says not good for natural stones, works best with porcelain/ceramic. i'm all okay there in one bathroom. in another bathroom I'm using glass tile...it doesn't mention glass...i would guess this is okay b/c it's not a stone? what do you think? (noted to install it it may cost more than regular grout, and would need someone experienced, but can deal with that) I did quick google and looks like it also comes in colors. I also saw these other posts too, pasting them here in case someone reads this thread and finds these useful: https://www.houzz.com/discussions/2699825/white-grout-that-stays-white https://www.houzz.com/discussions/2463266/is-epoxy-grout-worth-it https://www.houzz.com/discussions/2287705/has-your-white-epoxy-grout-turned-yellow...See Morecplover
