Epoxy vs Urethane grout
Comments (3)Thanks for the input Mongo! We try to be very diligent with the installation too. And SpectraLock was absolutely great both immediately after installation and few years later. Unfortunately, we will start our bath reno shortly after that kitchen backsplash project, so there will no be enough time to get a long term test for Dimension grout. Oh well, it could be actually because with our full time job and other activities, our remodeling will not be fast. What do you think about the aesthetic effect of this grout? Is it worth the hassle and the extra cost? I did not see it in person, only on pictures.....See MoreIs epoxy grout worth it?
Comments (50)I had a contractor who was very experienced with epoxy grout apply it in my downstairs bathroom. It does "slump" as others have mentioned, resulting in terribly shallow application on the floor, exposing tile corners you could feel with your toes. After much research on the Spectralock epoxy grout website, I found a PDF file advising reapplication over the existing grout, as a solution to shallow grout application. YES, you can apply epoxy grout over dried epoxy grout!! I printed out the PDF and called Spectralock customer service to confirm. YES was their answer. Even my experienced contractor did not know about this. It pays to READ people! I'm super happy with the outcome....See MoreEpoxy grout worth it?
Comments (15)Opticolor is an epoxy grout. The sealing will help, but it will not stop the liquid part from seeping into most marbles. This happens in a few days. If you don't see it by now, then you got lucky. From the Opticolor instructions Note: Marble, granite, limestone, agglomerated stone and slate are natural products consisting of a vast combination of minerals and chemicals that may cause the material to behave or react in a manner beyond our control. Therefore, determine the suitability of all materials before proceeding with the installation. To ensure desired results, a mockup installation is required before the actual installation. Comments (16)Mistakes can be multifactorial. I can understand their thought process in doing what they did, and I'm not trying to say that they are doing bad work or are unprofessional. in fact these guys made the large format tile look great in a tiny space thus correcting my novice design mistake. I did try to prevent the grout mixing mistake and they didn't listen to my instructions. So if the product fails in any way later on, the clear cut thing would be for them to fix it. I'm just going to cross my fingers and hope that it's going to be ok. Luckily this only affected a $2k portion of tile before I convinced them to stop doing it, and I also got the tile at a steep discount. Given lack of answers I think I will replicate this grout mixture and grout some leftover pieces onto waterproofed cement board. Then stress it with all sorts of chemicals and see if there is breakdown. Should be interesting. My bet is that nothing will happen....See Moremark_rachel
