Grout doesn't match.

Ended up having to replace tile in hall bath. Used tile already thruout hall and dining /kitchen areas. Found the receipt that lists the color. Ordered it. Mixed up a small bit and placed it in ainconspicuous area. It does not match. What are my options.? Is it possible to mix colors together to match what is already down? Paint a new color over the existing? Frustrating!

Has the existing grout been there a while? The older grout is not going to look as bright and clean as brand new grout, especially on floors.

I don't care if it comes from the same bag. The grout in the existing floor has been there for a while, and therefore has had the chance to get dirty, whether or not it's noticeable. Also, there's no saying the grout is being mixed with exactly the same amount of water, or the ambient humidity the same as it was when the rest of the room was grouted. The biggest thing, though, would be the age of the existing vs the new grout. Give it time, and it'll all blend in together.

You'd have to clean all the grout thoroughly before applying a stain or grout paint anyway, so you may as well just clean it. Try buying some oxygen bleach in a high concentration (not Oxyclean, that's pretty weak). Here's a link to one company that sells it, but there are others if you do a Google search. From all I've read, it should restore dirty grout to near new condition without too much scrubbing. Here is a link that might be useful: Oxygen Bleach

Just a quick comment. We kept the same ceramic tiles that had been down for 40 years. We liked them and they are no longer available. We only had 24 - 12" octagons left from the original purchase. Daniel, our miracle tile guy, added the tiles for the 2 ft. of additional floor space we needed and he made it with one left over. There was some slight color mismatch between the tiles that had been down and the tiles that had been in a box, but he matched the old grout perfectly. I agree that the GC should do it now for all of the above stated reasons, but, just in case, the grout can probably be matched pretty well. Also, keep any extra tiles for later, just in case. The tiles toward the front of the picture toward the carpet are new.

The later pictures look more accurate during daylight, but at night the floor appears to have more red tones and the ctop appears a bit more gray. The porcelain tile has a very dull finish so it's absorbing the light while the shiny granite is reflecting it We are still going back and forth on back splash options. I'm thinking the back splash should be simple since the ctop is so speckled and busy. I would like a combination of stone tile and glass tile, but nothing that commits me to any certain color scheme. Knowing us it will be Christmas before we decide a wall color. I think we will stay away from colors that are too green because it will make the cabinets look too red. We have a neutral taupe, light blue/green, yellow, and gray theme going throughout the rest of the house. Thanks again for all the compliments and suggestions!

LOL, this thread caught my attn because I JUST grouted some tiles on my kitchen floor & thought the grout was looking darker then the rest. ~*sigh*~ Well, it had to be done since we removed a wall & had to replace the tile that had been cut against it with whole tiles. We had extra tiles & grout from the original job (8yrs ago!) so of course I used them. ANYWAY...I figured since it was stored in a cool, dark, dry place that it would have minimum fading. It honestly never occured to me that it could be darker! Very interesting. I actually like it better. Hmmmmmmmm Happyladi- they sell a handy little tool for removing grout. It takes some elbow greese, but once you get the hang of it, it was not too bad. I like your advice Bill. I think I will just wait a few months & re-evaluate then. Saying a little prayer over here that it will all blend ok! ;-) JoAnn

I'll give it some time but if it doesn't blend, then I'll be looking into a grout stain. I'm so over this project. One thing after another.

If you can get a piece of the old grout from a cracked area or an inconspicuous place, Color Rite can match it for you. They are a well respected company by tile professionals.
