How Do You Dispose Tree Cuttings & Trimming
Comments (13)I have had such a huge amount of brush every year for 12 years of living on this property, that I burn every Spring (even though I HATE burning - it is hot, dirty, and a PITA). There was so much brush because this 1.25 acre lot was horribly overgrown with mostly invasive woody plants, including oriental bittersweet, both common and glossy buckthorn, honeysuckle, HUNDREDS of Norway maples, Rosa multiflora, etc. I have been working on removing invasives and preserving/planting natives since 2005. It is pretty well under control, except for the back 1/4 acre or so, which is mostly wild and still has some invasive overgrowth. In lieu of burning, I am planning to create wildlife brush piles in the way back. I have used a number of buckthorn and norway maple trunks to build a 20 foot trellis. Ctpnchr, I like the idea of brush fences!...See MoreHow do you dispose of old bed sheets?
Comments (21)It’s always good to refresh your bedroom with brand new sheets from time to time, but what do you do with the old ones? When brainstorming eco-friendly ways to re-use and recycle old ones, a better way to think about bed sheets might just be “large, all-purpose cloths.” Once the linens have been worn out a little too much for a comfortable sleep, it can easily turn them into several other useful things. From picnic blankets to planting heaters to make bags, here are 10 brilliant ways to reuse and re-use bed sheets and keep the waste out of our landfills. Take your bed sheets for a picnic. There’s certainly no reason to fork out a fancy picnic blanket when you’ve got perfectly good bed sheets in your wardrobe. Bring them along as a sit-upon for your next outdoor meal, fold the sheet twice for extra coverage if the ground is a little damp. Make a draft stoppers Drafty doors and windows make not only your house uncomfortable in the winter—they make your heating system work harder than it needs to. You can put bits of old bed sheets in drafty corners to block out cold air, or you can craft easy-to-make draft catchers: Cut the sheets into squares or rectangles, sew them on three sides, fill them with rice or dried beans, then sew them on the last side. Don’t want to make them? No issue at all. Check amazon for cheap ones or check this one. When microwaved for 30 seconds, mini catchers often make perfect hand warmers you can stick in your coat pockets or heat packs for sore muscles. Just be sure to test the warmers with a finger before you catch them with your entire hand, in case they’re too hot. check this article for more ideas....See MoreHow do you dispose of garbage?
Comments (35)I wish I could compost again, I have a perfectly good composter but we have problems with skunks around here so everything goes into the garbage and out to the curb. The city even passed a by-law where all our trash has to go into hard sided bins, no plastic bags at the curb to help stop the skunk problem. When they tore some old buildings down along the riverfront the rats started moving up into the neighbourhoods. My neighbour 2 yards over killed 9 rats in one day, the rats got as far as the yard next door. The city rat inspector came in and said there were no burrows in my yard but he said they were next door so he laid bait along the fence line. He said I was fortunate I did not have a pool or a vegetable garden and my composter was dry at the time since I was only putting dryer lint and tea bags in it In the County some areas have green bins with curb side pick up for kitchen waste. I wish we could have that....See MoreHow do you dispose your Rose branches?
Comments (36)Love the shredders! Not sure I'd want to use my rose shreds around the bushes tho. Don't wanna spread more B/S and mildew. I suppose if I let it compost in a pile for a yr or so, maybe that would work ok. Luckily, we have mandatory recycling and green waste pickups. Everybody has two 94 gal green waste cans that get picked up every other week. I pay extra to have a third can due to all the cuttings and pine needles. I just haul a smaller plastic trash can around when I'm pruning and then go dump it into the green waste cans. Before they went to the mandatory recycling, my husband used to haul it to the dump every so often. Ya know... the dang pine needles are worse than the rose cuttings. I bet I fill up 40 cans a yr, just in pine needles. I wonder if those chippers would cut them up? Once they do decompose, they make pretty decent mulch. But when they're fresh, they're a big messy, slippery carpet, that on my sloped property can be dangerous. And the pine cones?! OMG, I've almost biffed it many times stepping on those dang things!...See Moreaok27502
