Do garbage disposal commercials break your heart?
Comments (7)You know, I keep finding myself dreaming of some way to rig up a garbage disposal unit over my compost bin, so I can dump my kitchen pail right into it and have it grind everything into little bits. I guess it's just one of those crazy notions that often fill my gourd, but it is one that visits me often. As far as tetanus shots go, I have been wondering what kind of critters are in that pile, along with the warm and fuzzy types. I never thought of tetanus though. I do wonder if "quarrum sensing" goes on in there, to cause one species to check out who else exists in the neighborhood, and what that might cause to happen or not happen. It makes me want to learn a whole lot more about microbiology....See MoreSo, how do I live without a garbage disposal?
Comments (40)We have septic at both our home and lake cabin and though we have a disposal at home we don't use it - other than for what Sue36 mentions - flicking it on to suck the dishwater down the drain more quickly. Sure - you can have one if you push it - but why? Have you ever seen someone's property torn up to install a replacement septic system or had to buy one? It's happening alot where I live. People will say they've never had a problem with their septic system but in reality a septic system can be failing without being apparent to the homeowner. I keep all the little plastic bags I get at stores and use one each time I'm prepping a meal - set it right by me and the cutting board. I'll put all the plant type stuff in one since we recycle that type of waste - composting of sorts - but we don't make compost for gardening, etc. - we leave the compost in the woods. If I have yucky meat or fish type stuff I put that in a separate bag and tie it tightly shut. I will either put it in the inside trash can or take it out to the garbage can. We too don't have a huge kitchen trash can so garbage doesn't stay inside very long. The other thing I've done - if I want to peel a bunch of things into the sink so the peels aren't flying all over - is line the sink with a newspaper - peel away into the newspaper - then pick paper and peels up when done - no muss, no fuss. Really, it's not a big that big a deal - if it's the worst problem you have to deal with you'll be a lucky person....See MoreShaw sink owners, what flange and garbage disposal do you have?
Comments (16)In order to use a Waste King disposal with a Rohl Shaw's sink (or any sink thicker than 3/4" for that matter) you will need to use an ISE flange and an adapter. I just installed mine after trying many different flanges, and finally found this solution: Parts you will need: 1. Extended ISE compatible flange (part #FLG-SSLG) 2. Waste King 3-Bolt Mount Adapter (part #3101) 3. ISE Quick Lock Mounting Flange (part #QLM-00) 4. ISE body flange (part #5298) 5. EZ-Mount Waste King disposal (I used the Waste King L-8000) I ordered all of these parts on amazon. Installation: 1. install the ISE Quick Lock Mounting Flange per the package instructions, except substitute the ISE extended flange. 2. Next assemble the adapter portion -- in order from top to bottom: splash guard (from 3-bolt adapter kit), ISE body flange, adapter (from 3-bolt adapter kit), mount ring (included with disposal). I found it helped to smear a small amount of dish soap between the splash guard and mount ring or else there was too much friction between the two. Press this whole assembly onto the flange installed in step 1 and twist the mount ring to lock into place. 3. Garbage disposal will now twist into place on the mount ring. See my assembled disposal below:...See MoreDo most of your have a garbage disposal
Comments (62)BTW, I'm not sure if you can still get these now that I think Target owns the Smith & Hawken name, but we have big plastic compost bins from Smith & Hawken (which actually came from our city through a discount program) that do a great job of protecting the compost pile so it's not out in the open but is still getting air. They're very low-tech---literally just a piece that goes on the bottom of the pile, then three stacked side pieces and a lid that can all be taken apart and hosed off---but they sit in the back corner of our yard and are very unobtrusive, and have yet to be bothered by anyone (including our overly-inquisitive dog, who is well aware that food scraps go in, but still leaves the bins be once the lids are closed). We haven't had fly issues, though we do occasionally get ants---when that happens, we shift the balance to a little more "brown" (leaves, yard waste, plus coffee grounds) and a little less "green" (food waste) for a week or two and it generally tapers off. (I also occasionally spray the edge of the bins with limonene oil, which we also use in our garden on occasion for ants.) However, we also live in a very moderate climate, so it rarely gets above 80 or below 40---I'm sure this helps with bugs and smells, too....See MoreSue_va
