What type of grass is this?

I'm trying to identify whether the grass in my new place is Kikuyu or Buffalo. Mum says Kikuyu guy at Bunnings says Buffalo. I'm leaning toward my mum :)

Note there is also couch mixed in the front third – well there was – I've dug it out but now just need to be sure what the rest is to determine how to patch the third that is dirt now.

Your Mum is right. That's Kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum). As for patching bald spots, I'd just cut a square from a healthy patch, about 30cm x 30cm and maybe 10cm deep, then plant that in a same size hole in the bald area.

If it gets sun and water, it'll take over before summer ends...

(And I'll bet your couch reappears, too!)

Cheers Shaxhome. We are most likely going to plant a weeping mulberry in the middle of the grassed area as a feature tree so I should have plenty of healthy sections to make plugs from.

Sorghastrum nutans has inflorescence branches that are less dense, and its anthers (at least here) are yellow, instead of red like shown. That looks more like Saccharum (previously Erianthus), to me. There isn't enough detail in the photos to suggest a species.

This is a Carex, such as C. annectens, triangularis, fissa, etc., etc., etc. Most of the 636 recognized US species are indeterminate by looking at Internet photos, which are often carrying incorrect labels. A "good" ID for Carex usually requires an entire, mature specimen in hand (including the root), a dissecting microscope, a very good dichotomous key and a talented reviewer.

The grass growing on the sidewalk could be crabgrass. The grass that you are standing on could be bahia.

Looks like a variegated sedge to me, Carex species. Perhaps C. morrowii or oshimensis.
