10 years ago, I really wanted the water/ice dispenser so we got it. I will never get another one. What a big mistake. There was alays ice dropped on the hardwood floor. It was hard for me to get the ice without having some drop on the floor. With 2 kids, these are type of things that are hard to "teach" well enough to avoid the problem every single time. It actually died once and had it repaired. Then it died again with the flap in the open position. We disconnected dispenser and closed the flap so the air would not get into the freezer all the time. I think a problem with these is that everytime you use it, it lets in room air into the freezer compartment. This causes a large amount of humidity (it has to do with the relative humidity difference between room temperature and freezer compartment) and the water freezes out and causes freezer burn to the food. It's like briefly opening and closing the freezer door everytime you use the ice dispenser. Many people like them very much but not for me.

We just got a French door freezer-bottom Samsung..very large, regular depth, not counter. Water and ice dispenser aren't separate, but a nice feature is that it has a 2nd ice-maker in the freezer...we love it.

I would just like to comment even though this is an older thread. French door refrigerators with in-the-door ice dispensers are known to have problems. This is due to the ice maker being located in the refrigerator area rather than the freezer area. All brands have problems. We had to replace our Samsung french door refrigerator after two years because of recurrent problems with ice buildup around the ice maker making it unusable. Samsung repairmen came out several times, the last time even replacing the entire ice maker but to no avail. After much research I learned that these all have problems despite the brand and although not everyone who has a French door refrigerator with an in-the-door ice dispenser will have problems, these types of refrigerators have an inordinate amount of issues necessitating repair or replacement. We finally bought a French door refrigerator with the ice maker in the bottom and have no problems.

If you decide on the water/ice on the refrigerator please make sure your installer uses a metal braided hose to connect the water lines. We have had the very unfortunate experience of the plastic tube fail twice in just over a year. A year ago in our last house we pulled the fridge out for cleaning and when we pushed it back in the plastic line pinched causing tiny small leaks that took over two weeks to discover since no water pooled in front of the fridge. We had no idea until the ceiling in the room below was suddenly bulging and pouring out water onto the carpet. In the end it ruined all the hardwood in the kitchen as it leaked underneath and spread on the subfloor, cabinets had to pulled out and the room down below had to almost completely redone including carpet, ceilings, drywall, paint....... We were trying to sell and had to refuse showings for 6-8 week while it was being repaired. What a mess! And then just last night the plastic tube on our new fridge of not even 3 months ripped off the clamp spraying water everywhere at 1:30 am thank goodness I heard the noise. The water was only spraying for about 25 seconds by the time I turned it off screaming at my poor sleeping son to grab towels. In that short time before we could wipe up the water it had leaked through the floor onto the ceiling below and came out my son's bedroom light fixture. We are really hoping not too much damage has been done this time as we would hate to have another brand new home torn apart again. :( Other than that we use the water/ice all the time it's just the water lines that are our concern.
