I am sorry, palms are not my specialty here in St Louis. I THINK it will resprout as long as the top top isn't broken. It will just look bare for a bit.

What are the 1x3's leaning up against or strapped to the trees for?

Since it still has green fronds I think it can recover. Is the staking necessary because these are newly planted or did the trees shift in the storm? That may be the bigger question.

There are 2 other forums that might be able to offer more responses, Palms and Cycads, or Tropical plants.

Thanks! Yes, they were recently planted and we were told those need to stay up for a year.

I'm near Denver, so like toronado, not in palm country! I think all it needs is time, no fertilizing, just proper watering, unless the seller/planter requires it for warranty. I spend some time in the gulf coast each year and have heard that pruning out the dead is more for aesthetics than benefit of the tree. But, I'm not a palm expert, for sure.

It's not dead. That looks about right for a new planting. In the spring you will see a spike shoot up. That will be a new frond that will eventually open. Don't cut it off. Dead Queen Palms will turn brown and evenually the frond will just hang. The top will fall over like a bent straw. Those wooden supports should be just that, supports with out any nails into the palm. Palms are very sensitive that way.

If this was just storm damage (forgive the 'just') and the heart is undamaged, it should recover. With fungal infections, palms can go bad very quickly indeed (as I witnessed with an enormous phoenix the bloody householder decided to 'trim') but generally, if the growing tip is OK, then all should (eventually) be well.

I have been reading about some unlikely deaths occurring as a result of suffocation under vast shrouds of hanging palm fronds (during underfrond removal.)..so, a little silver lining, you will not be having the deaths of tree surgeons on your head.

The growing tip, called a crownshaft, appears intact in these plants and therefore, recovery is likely. No palm is especially fast-growing, so don't expect miracles, that is, unless you understand that life itself is indeed a miracle.

BTW, I just got back from 20 days in SW Florida. Within a week, not one, not two, but three separate storm events occurred within mere miles of where I was domiciled, each one of which produced twisters. In particular, last Friday's storm, which BTW dropped 5 inches of rain in two hours(!) came right across the very location I was at. In truth, with that kind of rainfall, an observer would never see a twister until it was far too late.
