Is my palm dead ???

I live in conyers, georgia and planted a 8 foot sabal palmetto last june. I did not know much about these trees at the time and apparently neither did the people I purchased it from. They did not hurricane cut it at the time of installation. About three months afterwards, fronds began to die off so I cut them all off. There was a green spear about 8 inches tall in the center. it remained that way from sept. till about december when the spear turned tan as well but on one section it has a touch of green. Is this tree dead? Should I pull it up ? I really like the look of these trees, is there another variety that would have a better success rate. Any info would be appreciated.
