Is glass mosaic tile a pain to keep clean in a shower?
Comments (8)Jenna, Mold spores are everywhere. When they find a moist location, they can bloom. So the key is ventilation to remove humid air and a properly sloped pan on the floor to prevent the floor from retaining moisture. Soap, shampoo, and conditioners can also have an effect, in terms of residue left on the walls or floor. After a consumers report article years ago we switched to Zest soap, and sure enough, it rinses much cleaner than the soaps we had previously used. Mt wife has a collection of lotions and potions (shampoos and conditioners), some rinse less well than others. If you have hard water, the minerals could leave residue on the tile. One thing to consider is having a hand held shower that you can take off the wall and use that to rinse down the walls after you shower. It only takes a few seconds. If you need additional help, some use a squeegee and give the walls and floor a quick once-over, that can prevent mineral deposits being left on the wall from hard water. In general, taking in all the negatives, if you have a tough situation, your hubby is right in that less grout can mean less maintenance issues. But in a well-designed, well ventilated, and well-built shower, you should have no problems to begin with. Mongo...See Morehow to keep glass tile clean?
Comments (15)sleeve I was worried about mine using the squeegee too. But he does it 98% of the time. I go in sometimes with a microfiber (works great, like an eraser) after a shower and scrub the bottom part that still gets a film on it, even tho we squeegee allot. I have terrible water here. But I think you will find that he will love the look of the new shower and will want it to stay that way and will get with the program....See MoreCentury Home Help with Shower Size and Glass Enclosure
Comments (4)Well, that changes things. I'd still put the door on the long side furthest from the toilet. A simple door is probably best. A sliding door probably means a track and tracks tend to collect yuk. I'd put the hinge on the toilet side, but either would do. My in-laws put in a sink like the one you're looking at into their very tiny only bathroom maybe 5'0" x 9'8". It looked good. The problem is you need other surfaces to set things on like soap, hairbrush, toothbrush. I like hiding the plumbing. This is an adobe house and there were some issues with the 1940's plumbing, so we had to make some repairs in the tub/shower (adobe walls on two sides covered in concrete) and took the opportunity to refresh the bathroom. One of the things we did was to replace the good looking sink with a more functional small vanity. The three kids who live there were so excited! They also liked the new medicine cabinet, the light that was actually bright, and the turquoise bottom half of the room. Small things....See MoreRestarting tub-to-shower conversion, questions about glass enclosure
Comments (9)Thanks for the input. I just measured my master shower door and it's 28.5". I think I will plan for a 26" door, swinging inward and outward. I like the idea of the pony wall being a little bit longer and just leaving the 26" space for the future door. My contractor is very thorough and will be sure to block for a door and grab bar to be installed in future if desired. Definately will put the controls in the pony wall like we did in master. The depth of the room right now is 64" from the current finished shower tile to the wall. So without encroaching on the 30" space for the toilet, we could get a 34" depth shower. That's still pretty small, but don't see a way to make it deeper without expanding the scope and $$ by stealing space from adjacent attic. If money were no object we would look into doing that. I'll ask the contractor about it, but I don't think budget will allow....See MoreRelated Professionals
