good books/websites for bug/disease/weed id?
Comments (3)Many thanks to landarch and Steve's digits! (I take it Steve didn't have much to do with it?) These are some good resources, although I suppose I was hoping to find something a bit more comprehensive - there are weeds and bugs in my garden I'm curious about that don't seem to appear in any of these websites, nor in the book from what I can tell on Amazon. But these should get me started - thanks again! ~emmers...See Moregood website/article for watering new trees?
Comments (8)The plan is really to get on the HOA board and if the members try to go with ineffective watering practice, i'd just use the info to help them understand how deep watering really works better. the former president was pretty much useless. He never did much. One other board member did everything and she's the one that asked me to plant trees. unfortunately, she got tired of doing all the work so she decided not to do it for another year. I just didn't expect current HOA board to totally ignore my requests esp that they knew that I planted trees. I don't know why. They never gave me reasons or anything. I could care less about bylaws anyway. We didn't have sprinkler system when we moved in and the developer of 2nd phase of subdivision was the one who helped pay for the sprinkler system when he added extra land to the park (I didn't plant trees there). I highly doubt that HOA board could do much against me considering that many neighbors knew what I did for the park. We used to have ugly looking park with no grass and trees. I tried to improve it by planting trees but obviously the current HOA board sees differently. Weed should not be at the top of priority in my opinion as trees are much more valuable and provide much needed shade. Anyway, I was just trying to make it look nicer for the neighborhood with trees at the park. That may be the final straw as I am seriously considering selling the house within the next 2 years if economy/job market improves and live elsewhere without HOA. I just don't want dead trees there while I'm trying to sell the house......See Moregood cactus and succulent websites
Comments (39)"I was planing on growing it in a pot ... with a green house in the winter ..." "Because for my cactus soil i get cheap soil from lowes or homedepot throw in a bunch of prelite and rocks and a bit of food ... should that be fine?" Yeah, you definitely need to do some reading. : p Perlite and rocks will improve a fine soggy soil simply by leaving less space in the pot for water to occupy, but it's only marginally better than deliberately underpotting the plant. Long story short, any potting medium that forces a plant to drink or drown is bad, and most succulents will end up drowning. Might I ask which sorts of cactus you have at the moment? Some of them take bad soil better than others. I would recommend reading through as many of the 'gritty mix' topics as possible (more than once, and at intervals. There's a lot to take in), and also the one about growing trees in containers. The latter is less immediately applicable because cacti don't need aggressive rootwork to survive in a container, but it does explain the importance of roots to a plant's overall health. If a plant has weak roots, it's less able to deal with environmental stresses and pests. If one of these stressors finally overwhelms the plant, the blame will fall there and not with the plant itself even if it was the only one for miles around that succumbed....See MoreCan you recommend a good tile website?
