8 Foot Ceilings with Double Stacked Upper Cabinets?

We are renovating an older home and I love the look of double stacked upper cabinets. We only have about 96" floor to ceiling. Base cabinets will be 35" - just because that is what the existing were and I prefer them at that height. The gap will be 16" - the under mount lights will be built in to a false bottom of the upper cabinet. Then I am thinking a 30" cabinet stacked with a 10" glass cabinet (perhaps 40" cabinet with 2 doors) which is back lit above which will leave about 5" for crown. Does anyone have photos of something similar? I could do 32" stacked with 8"?? I am just hoping someone has done similar and I can get some ideas!! Thanks ever so much!

Are you planning 16" between countertop and bottom of upper cabinets?

Yes - the under mount lighting will be built in the false bottom of the lowest upper cabinet so I don't need to have a light valance!

illini girl, it will look fine! Having looked again at a bazillion Houzz kitchens and finished kitchens on Pinterest with the glass upper-uppers lit, and UCL, I'm noticing how much the color of the light affects the overall look. I've elected not to have my upper-uppers (which are glass on the range wall and half glass half solid on my refrig wall) not lit. I have 8' ceilings and have made my own stacked cabinets. I took 42" cabs and put a rail where 30" would end at the top, on a regular cabinet. I put 30" doors on the bottom and 12" doors on the top. Voila! Stacked cabinets. My evil plan is to someday buy (or make -- I haven't given up) beaded inset face frames. I'll make the frame the entire 42" tall, with the dividing rail. On another wall, I just found 12" tall cabinets at the reuse center and stuck 'em up there. They fit beautifully and will be stacked when I'm dong painting, etc. Again, with future beaded face frames, it'll be the entire 42" tall. I've heard people here say that under 9' ceilings the stacked cabinets look bad, or something. Can't remember what, but that was the gist of it. I think it looks great. I love the glass doors I found for the uppers, so to me it looks airy with the white cabinet insides showing. I am putting only scribe molding on the top because there isn't room for fancy molding. I don't mind, though. I'm very traditional but simple and clean. I'd ask him for a mock-up or where he's installed them before. Proportion does make a huge difference.

thanks Kompy. You have a lovely kitchen, and the kitchen doors you posted above are really pretty, and create a nice, warm, look. I'll ask my cabinet guy about them. may_flowers. I'm ditching the old stove, and getting an induction cooktop and accompanying convection oven. re: I've seen kitchens with a row of tiny squares dotting the ceiling with one little piece of white pottery barely discernible behind the glass. Yes, I've seen this too, and noted that it's not a good look. Not worth drawing the eye up there or paying to light and paint the interior imo. I also prefer the doors to be the same width on a wall so it looks like one unit. I agree with this too. Fouramblues has a nice width that displays items well. Yes, they look like 30"s to me.

the old glass cabinet had heavy leaded glass and a very wide door. Yes, now that you say it, I think it's the width that I don't like. It's so much wider than the other cabinets, making it seem like "odd man out". I'm not surprised to hear you say that the plate racks /small drawers were pretty much useless. Interesting. I like to analyze just what it is that I like /don't like.

Are your base cabinets 35" including your counter, or prior? Most are 34.5 before counter. Are you doing custom cabinets? If so you could do 29" tall cabs with 12" stacked, 4" crown, 16" backsplash with 35" lowers/countertop.

I have 108" ceiling, with 6" worth of crown and 18" worth of space between uppers and counters. My cabinets are 18" stacked on 30". I really wouldn't want a cabinet smaller than 18" storage-wise, but aesthetically 12" might be fine. I wouldn't do 8". Here's mine. My three double cabinets are 26" wide each. The shorter you make the uppers the narrower they need to be IMO or you end up with squatty doors.

Beautiful results - I am jealous of your height! Base will be 35" including counter top. Really more for appearance not storage for the upper staked cupboard. Good point about being squatty!

I think 18 inches is the minimum recommended distance between counter and upper cabinets. We're taller people so we're doing 21, I think. In researching that dimension I read that people have a problem using some small appliances with lower clearance (mostly mixers) so that's something to consider if you havent already.

I'm short and 16" from counter to cabinet allows me to reach the bottom three shelves. I love them but I cannot use most appliances underneath them. I have a prep area where there are no uppers. It works great for me. If I were to sell, a taller person could raise them all that they wanted...
