This was a shock. He kept his cancer very private. Hardly anyone knew he was sick.

This was a shock, I don't recall hearing about his struggle with cancer. Maybe I missed it.

Very sad. Married 23 years, very rare in this business.

They reported today on the radio that he rarely gave interviews, and interviewed a singer who was part of his entourage, and a woman who'd interviewed him six times, over the years, who said that he really participated with interviewers, and wanted to learn something from that person.

Thanks for that link, OJ. It's so interesting to hear the interviews and thoughts from others who knew him.

The interviewer, who was also a fan, listed at least a half dozen vocations that he could have done, and actually did do, to some extent, in a creditable fashion.

I felt that both of them helped us get a more fully-developed picture of the man.

There may have been more, as I was in and out of the car.

I was shocked to hear of this earlier this morning. He was only 7 years older than I am now. His Ziggy Stardust days were awesome and awe-inspiring -- his entire 80's career inspired. He remains awesome... (I know I missed some of his material afterwards). Sadness and sighs.

Has anyone seen the video for his song "Lazarus" that he released on his birthday last week? He had a sense of humor.

We went to see the Bowie exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago last winter. It was an interesting crowd as there were people from all ages who were/are fascinated by Bowie. It was an excellent exhibit and I learned a lot about the man. Had no idea he was ill, though, and was shocked to read the new this morning. RIP, David.

Makes me so sad. He was a favorite of so many of my family members. RIP Ziggy

Sorry to say I never paid much attention to him, but he certainly was respected and admired. Sixty-nine, way too young for that talent to be lost.

Sad today, he was brilliant.

The new album was just released Friday, seems like he was hanging on to release it. Yes the first song on the new album, Lazarus, is very much a statement piece.

He hadn't been doing well for a few years. It wasn't publicized, the way some do nowadays, but it was kind of known. I don't think anyone realized how very sick he was, however. I think maybe he was holding on for the release of Lazarus, the way people do when they want to see a milestone day. Great irony in that song...as usual. :)

David Bowie will be missed.

I think his recurring muse was to be deliberately ambiguous and to mislead everyone's expectations, with everything he did and how he did it. I can see these very elements in how he "staged" his death.
