Ugh...I think I have mold in my containers!
Comments (7)I'm not sure if technically a mold, likely at least a fungi.....most of the time seedlings would grow straight through the white fuzz without any problems. But ... it is a warning to you that conditions are suitable for fungi and that might lead to damping off. (And damping off is any one of a bunch of fungi, many times you won't see any evidence one is there until the seedlings tip over and lay down.) It's been wet and mild, not a lot of difference between night and daytime temps - combine that with little air circulation and that white fuzz will grow on a few of the different sowing mediums. I'd do more air holes if you find you do need to cover. We could be through the worst of our winter - if something unusual shows up in February and you think your seedlings are too exposed, there is always a large sheet of plastic, old tablecloth, things you can do to protect them again temporarily if needed. But they don't need protection in this 45-55 range we've been in the last several days and moving air is going to keep them healthy and sturdy both. I'm so close to the ocean we are constantly damp where if you are PDX you are a little more dry. My pots, germinated and ungerminated, are uncovered. If I see something that could signal temps into the mid/low 20's, I've got plastic drum liners (clear) that will slip over tired plant carts on my deck :)...See MoreDo 'green' detergents contain anti-corrosion agents?
Comments (9)I pulled out ye olde detergent formulation handbook (yes, I have one)... I see that sodium metasilicate (powder) and sodium metasilicate pentahydrate (liquid) "provide alkalinity and can protect soft metals such as aluminum, copper, zinc, brass and tin from the corrosive effects of strongly alkaline cleaning solutions. Silicates also reduce the redeposition of soils." My book also states that STPP is often combined with sodium metasilicate to produce a synergistic effect where the two work better together. Also of note regarding STPP, it cannot solubilize fats on its own, but can with the addition of SDDBS (sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate). Some people in this forum are under the impression that STPP can rid your machine of gunk and clean oil stains from clothing, which doesn't appear to be the case. However, my book does recommend that if you are using detergents with a precipitating softener (sodium carbonate, soda ash, wash soda, etc) in hard water, adding STPP will prevent those precipitates from agglomerating onto your washer parts. You will note that the vast majority of drum spiders in front loaders are made from aluminum, a metal that can be corroded by a strongly alkaline cleaning solution. The addition of silicates to such a solution should minimize the corrosive effects on the spider assembly....See MoreSears Detergent Deeply Discounted Today
Comments (4)I read about the discontinuation in the Automatic Washer.org forum; however, someone else stated that they were just getting rid of old stock and starting a new "design?" or something like that. When I looked at Sears website for my area yesterday, there was a different looking box that did 180 loads, it was orange and green and looked similar to the "Advanced" box but just a little different. This was not there Friday and just appeared yesterday, so I don't know what the true deal is. I'm only stating what I read in the other forum and what others were talking about. I do hope that it is just a change of design and they will keep selling it. ...and don't ya know it's so hard to find out who actually makes it and what's actually in it. Last I read, someone said it was made by DeSoto but I definitely have never found an MSDS for it. I thought all chemical products like detergents had to have an MSDS....See MoreOMO detergent arrived today, Ingredient pic too!
Comments (7)My translation might be a little off... but I hope this helps, Adam :) I wish I had paid more attention in class. The box is in Portuguese, but.. most of it's readable, from learning spanish. anionic surfactant, buffering agent, detergent builders, detergent helpers/processing aid, artificial colourants / dyes, enzymes, optical brightener, fragrance/perfume, aqua/water and Sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate and ... "cargo". I really have no idea, what the cargo is supposed to mean. I'm guessing detergent builders = STPP, or Washing Soda....See Moregeorgect
