Comments (20)Sure chicken stock can support growth of botulism. Any low acid food can, and meat and meat broths are low acid. I think everyone goes through that 'scared' to eat it phase. Especially so if they haven't watched an experienced canner a few times do a certain product. The first time I made saurkraut, and the fermentation started I freaked out. Nothing smelling that bad could surely be edible. I talked it over with a couple of experienced kraut makers, and even had one go down and inspect my 'work in progress' and guess what, when it was done.......it was so good. Try to keep things in perspective. If you use a method you know is current and safe, and you followed directions, and the product sealed well you are probably just fine. If you have any doubts whatsoever when it comes time to eat it, follow common sense. If it smells off, doesn't look right, is growing something, or the lid pops off like an explosion when you open it, for pity's sake don't even smell it. Dispose of it safely. If it looks fine and you still have doubts, heat it to the boiling point for twenty minutes. That will kill the bacteria and break down the toxins. I have read the stats on botulism poisoning each year at the CDC websites. If you disregard the cases of infant botulism and wound botulism there are relatively few cases of it from food consumption considering the amount of food preserved annually in this country. That's not going to help you if you are one of the cases, though, is it? In my case the only time I was concerned was when I canned up a huge surplus of potatoes in a good gardening year. Even commercially canned spuds will sometimes get cloudy liquid from the potatoes disintegrating in the heating process.......but it turned me off. Comments (26)Okay, so my GardenWeb friend, corgimum, checked out the Ballard outlet in West Chester, and she found my coveted bench there - in black . . . sigh. And, while it is shrink wrapped, it is not boxed. corgimum even found me the name of a shipper, and I called, but they are only open on weekdays. corgimum - a huge thank you to you! I'm so fortunate that you checked this out, or I would have given up long ago. So, I called the store to see about making arrangements for a shipper and told them my story and situation. They gave me the name of an errand service in town that makes purchases and ships. So I called that number, and we soon determined that the bench was bigger than what FedEx will allow and would require a different shipping company. She also doesn't do packaging, but would take it somewhere for a price of $25 per hour. I then searched for other pack-and-ship locations around the West Chester area, and I found one that is open today. The gentleman was very nice and said they could pick up the package, box it, and ship it. It will cost quite a bit, but the bench is on sale at the outlet for several hundred dollars less than its usual price. So, I'm in the process of making the arrangements. Ballard will hold the bench for me for a couple of days. The biggest hitch now is that the Ballard store requires the credit/debit card used for the purchase to be that of the person making the purchase. So, somehow the shipping company needs to pre-charge my card for the amount, etc. I'm still a bit afraid to get my hopes up. I'm not sure that will all go smoothly. Comments (15)Once a friend of mine sent me a Christmas gift but it never came, until 6-9 months later! It was a homemade fruitcake. I was swapping with Kiwi who's in New Zealand and my package never got to her. Weeks later it showed up back at my house, pretty mangled. I had to resend it to her. I've had a few Netflix movies disappear when I mailed them back. I was putting them in my mailbox and putting the flag up but I only did it very rarely, usually I drop them in the drive thru mail drop in front of our post office. So, I got kinda suspicious that everytime I left them in our mailbox here at the house they would turn up missing. I quit doing that, in fact I only put mail that doesn't belong to me out there anymore. Then about two months ago I was leaving work and dropped my Netflix movies in a curbside box in Lexington and one turned up missing again. I hate getting the ex's mail. He's never lived in my house and I just find it really annoying that they are sending his crap to me....See Morecompletely OT but if you ever have or ever will stay in a hotel
Comments (13)We fool ourselves into thinking that our environment is a lot more sanitary than it is. I worked in several very nice restaurants during college and know that there is a wide range of cleanliness out there, and few places meet the standards we would hope. This is true even if they pass health inspections, because I've seen health inspectors walk right past things that should have gotten the restaurant severe warnings and fines. Working in a restaurant with a salad bar made me swear off salad bars for the rest of my life. I have never seen anything as disgusting as the food storage practices that restaurant used for the salad bar. Between the blue preservative liquid they soaked the lettuce in to keep it from wilting to the way they refilled topping containers over and over without ever dumping the old stuff and washing the container, I can't stomach the thought. Blech! I've also seen first-hand a facility where plastic utensils were packaged into those little handy packs with a napkin, etc. Well, that shattered my illusions of those things being somehow sterile! I won't even tell you what I saw a worker do right before he picked up a set of utensils. All that is to say we live in a germ-filled world. There is no way to really avoid germs, and avoiding them is not always the best choice anyway. Unless you want to live in a plastic bubble, the best you can do is wash your hands frequently (and thoroughly--very few people take the time necessary to wash their hands correctly) and use good old common sense.
