My MIL used to mail birthday checks to our two daughters. She was old, her eyes weren't too good, sometimes she left the envelopes unsealed. She asked if I received the card she sent our older daughter, it had not arrived. About a week later, the post Office delivered a check for $25 made out to my daughter from her grandmother. No card, just the check. I drove to the post office to ask what happened. The worker said, they found the check on the floor. The envelope and card were no where to be found. But they knew our last name and got the check to us. MIL has the same last name as us, and it is very unusual. I was very impressed with their diligence!

Oh yeah, I have my last 2007 PA estimated tax check floating somewhere in mailneverland. Now anything as important as this gets certified - return reciept. NOw forever I will need to keep enough in the bank to cover that blasted check because it would cost $30 to cancel it.

Wow, that's weird. I think I'd have to trot down to the PO and ask them what the heck they think they're doing. lol

Yep, it happened to me once. Mailed off the credit card bill with a check for a whopping $30 something bucks. They never got it and charged me a service fee and interest, something I never have to pay! So I called and told them when I had mailed it and they waived the fees and I mailed them another check.

About 2 months later, Woody was cleaning out his truck and found the bill in its stamped envelope between the seats! Yikes, did I feel bad! lol Never trust a man to do something right... that's my motto.

Oh, and one time, same company- I never got a bill from them so didn't realize we owed them anything one month and then I got a late notice with fees. Made me mad, I didn't know Woody had used that card and wasn't expecting a bill, so I never missed it. Oh, they waived those fees, too, because we had such a great history with them. (That might have been before the other incident! lol)

Not a cheque story, but a weird post office story. Years ago, we lived in an apartment building near some railroad tracks, in a small town. A friend of mine sent me a letter, but she didn't have my address. She just put the city that I lived in and a MAP on the envelope, with the train tracks and the building. I couldn't believe I got that letter!

I had a Penney charge card for many years, and no problems. I bought some items at one of their stores, and could not use my card, as I had "missed a payment three months back". WHAT? Well, the check evidently never got there, but the ensuing two did. I was livid that they would not consider a good customer worthy of consideration, so I canceled my account with them, and haven't missed it at all. On the rare occasions I might want to buy something from them, I use my debit or master card.

A few years ago a couple of bill-paying checks were sidetracked somewhere between our local PO and the mail distribution hub about an hour away. Or got lost there..that place is notorious! Anyhoo, the two payees were in that very same city, and of course I got late notices and fees and the whole schmear. Called said payees, with check numbers and dates mailed (was quite a bit on my high horse) had all fees rescinded. A full FOUR WEEKS later those checks turned up in my bank statement! Is there a limbo for lost checks? At least they turned up, and cost me nothing extra.

My sister dropped off all her bills with payments into the drop box just outside the post office in her neighborhood.....and someone broke into it and she had a terrible time straightening it out.
Her husband died five years ago and all the bills where still in his name even though he had never written a check in his life. Most of the companies told her they couldn't give her any information because it wasn't her name on the bill.
I guess I had better take care of that stuff now while DH is still alive.

I sent in a bill payment one month a few years ago and never gave it another thought.Then one day i got an envelope addressed to me from the PO,and in it was the check i had sent off to pay the bill,and parts of the envelope.Seems it got hung up in something and part of it was found on the floor and the rest in a machine/conveyor or something.

So right away i called the CC co and told them what had happened,by then they had already added the late charge.I told them it wasn't my fault,and i had never been late in all the years i had been with them,nor had i ever made just the minimum pymt but always,way more.

I told them i'd make a copy of what i got from the PO and it's contents and send it to them,with a new check,and if they didn't drop the late charges i'd close the account.So they dropped them.

My aunt in AZ. sent my mom ( in Utah)a card with pictures in it. Mom new it was coming but when it did it was like it was sliced open and only one pic was in it. Aunt was really upset over there cause she didn't have copies. Week later step dad went to post office to send a package and there were some pics posted on the board wanting to know if anyone knew who they belonged to. Because they were pics of when mom and aunt were kids, step dad didn't know if they were there's or not. Went home and got mom to go see them and sure enough it was the pics that should have been in her envelope.

We get neighbors mail all the time. I have called the post office over and over about this. We live in country and i always put it back in box for next day letting carrier know this is not out mail. I know if this is happening to us then someone else is getting our mail sometimes too.

A mailbox in my town was lit on fire twice. I had used it very infrequently, but I continue using it once in a while. I always worry!

Once a friend of mine sent me a Christmas gift but it never came, until 6-9 months later! It was a homemade fruitcake.

I was swapping with Kiwi who's in New Zealand and my package never got to her. Weeks later it showed up back at my house, pretty mangled. I had to resend it to her.

I've had a few Netflix movies disappear when I mailed them back. I was putting them in my mailbox and putting the flag up but I only did it very rarely, usually I drop them in the drive thru mail drop in front of our post office. So, I got kinda suspicious that everytime I left them in our mailbox here at the house they would turn up missing. I quit doing that, in fact I only put mail that doesn't belong to me out there anymore. Then about two months ago I was leaving work and dropped my Netflix movies in a curbside box in Lexington and one turned up missing again.

I hate getting the ex's mail. He's never lived in my house and I just find it really annoying that they are sending his crap to me.

At the beginning of each month I write out all our monthly bills. My daughter mailed them on her way home by putting them in an outside box. Well, a few weeks later I received things in the mail that I was late. I knew I wasn't. I started checking and not one of my checks had been received. My first move was to call the post office where my daughter had left them. The lady said they were not there. She said the only thing that could have happened was when they took the mail from the box into the post office someone put something on the top of it. Now, this is a real small town post office.. Sounds to me she knew exactly what had happen. Somehow all the check reached everyone. HMMMM... I never use the outside boxes for any important mail.. Lesson learned...

I NEVER leave mail in our mailbox to be picked up - our mailman isn't by until after 4pm. Last year, I did send my Mom a photo reprint of her & dad smooching at a party in the 50's at someone's front door. Well, it fell out of the envelope at her postoffice - but! luckily, the staff were talking about it in front of a customer. When they showed the photo - he recognized my mom & dad - actually, he'd been at the party! so they delivered to my mom!

I'm always mailing pictures to my family,but i make sure the envelope is sealed very well.I NEVER lick an envelope,instead i use a glue stick and make sure it is sealed from end to end,which licking it doesn't accomplish.I then put stickers all over them.So far so good.

However i did send a cross stitch chart,floss and cloth in a box to a cross stitch buddy in S.Africa last April.She still hasn't rec'd it.I had to do the customs thing and all that,so i think someone saw that it said needlework on the customs form and stole it.

She checked the PO over there and i checked here,no luck.

I don't have a check story but a funny post office story. Sometime back my grandma received a letter from another grandchild out of state. She had written in little kid handwriting just the words Grandma, and the city and state underneath that. She did put her return address. Anyway, this was a small town and they knew my grandma had kids in that city and so she got the letter. I'm from the same town as my grandma and that story always hit me about how everyone truly does know everyone in a small town.
