Whew! LOVE the tile I got, sight unseen!!
Comments (23)Oh, the imitators don't bother me--I know full well that some of my choices are not mainstream, so I doubt the Vikkrell surround will catch on ;) But I copied so many aspects of so many different kitchens over on the kitchen forum--my computer's Kitchen Inspiration folder is gigantic!! This site is all about pay-it-forward! I loved being able to pick and choose little aspects of so many different kitchens/bathrooms...to me it is fun!! My sister-in-law and my mom and in the process of remodeling their kitchens and they do not seem to be enjoying it AT ALL. They just want it done and over with. I think I am one of a small percentage of people that actually ENJOY the whole process of it. And, don't get me wrong, I am the world's BIGGEST gardenweb fan--I don't know how any layperson gets through a major home remodel without this forum. And 90% of the people that I tell about this look at me like I have three heads or way too much time on my hands. My husband being one of them!! He appreciates the lower price items I find and some cool solutions to problems in our old house--but I would fall over if I ever caught him searching for something on GW! Just wouldn't happen! My ONLY complaint about gardenweb is that many people on here have MUCH larger budgets than I could ever imagine, so it's hard to see their BEAUTIFUL final products and not want the same thing. A LaCanche range in my kitchen??? To die for--and it would have looked fabulous!! But just buying that range would have been more than ALL of my appliances combined!! So I'm the cheapo-repro girl!! :) Sarah...See MoreBuying a house sight unseen, can anyone ID this gas range?
Comments (16)Thanks everyone! We're really, really excited about the move. The house is right over the NH border and about 30 min. to portsmouth. My husband and I are really "outdoorsy" and the area sounds perfect. We were in Japan for 4 years, and yes, their kitchens are awful. I LOVE to cook, and it was a challenge to say the least to cook in that tiny, badly-laid-out kitchen. The OTR micro will be going, and we'll install an outside vent if there isn't already one (it's an exterior wall). I like the colors of the cabinets and floors, so that will stay, but definitely new counters. I'm not sure what yet...I kind of picture something lighter, like a light granite or maybe copper or zinc. We're very much DIYers, and might do concrete (we've done it before). We'll also pull out the fridge surround so that it actually covers the sides of the fridge. I'd like to change out the appliances for stainless, but it isn't a priority and might not happen. Also, maybe new hardware on the cabs? Like nickle cup pulls for the drawers, etc? Overall, the house is very well built and spacious, and we can tone down the country without too much trouble. Those pendents are leather, and will be changed out for something more like this: Actually, most of the lighting has a moose motif, and will be changed. The challenge will be keeping true to the style of the house and still giving it a more modern sensibility. My style is more fun/eclectic/bright than this house, with white trim, but I'm going to keep the stained because it's well-done and there's a ton of it. We'll only be there a few years, so I can't make it too wacky. :-) Once we get there and get a better idea of how it reads in person, I'll get more photos up and get some advice on how to proceed with the de-moosing of the house....See MoreHas anyone ever bought their marble sight unseen?
Comments (16)Betsy- We are in Geneva and a place called MarbleTech (link below) has a location here, but I am seeking additional recs for pricing, selection, etc. Their site says they recently expanded from 5 Chicago locations to 11. Note: It seems their showroom locations are often not called MarbleTech (e.g., Geneva's is 'Granite Countertops'). Their slabs are in their Crystal Lake showroom and you can view pics of the slabs on their site, but the person I spoke to said it won't be up to date with the shipment they just got in today. He said there was a lot of marble in it. In fact, he said their demand for marble has gone up recently. (I chuckled to myself thinking it's all the people who follow this forum getting the courage to follow their hearts and put marble in their kitchens!) Anywho, I stopped by tonight to ask some basic questions and the person working explained to me that they are both a supplier and fabricator. That's lucky for me, I think. He also said that they can *easily* get something from another place (they don't have any calacatta or danby as of now) if they don't have it-- w/o any sort of commitment from me. Said they swap slabs all the time. Try saying that 3x really fast! I need to get further clarification on how exactly it works... Not sure if they would, for example, get a slab of danby from Stone City (thanks for that rec!) and then I could see it, or if they would want me to go to Stone City to pick the slab of danby and then they would 'swap'. He made it sound like it's not an additional cost. I'm tired & not sure this is making sense now, but I plan on talking to someone at the store tomorrow who I trust to understand it better. I want to start looking at slabs!!! At any rate, I am checking back tomorrow when the person I spoke to originally a couple of months ago (when I started scoping my remodel) will be in. She was fabulous and was 110% supportive of my choice to do honed white marble and even offered further encouragement! Needless to say I trust her and will get additional clarification on all of this, what they have, what I want and how to see it, etc. (And her name is Betsy-- go figure!) I will let you know if I learn anything useful. Thanks again and hope this helps you too! p.s. Do I only get an email of a response to my question if it's a thread I actually started? I had to dig to find this again and then saw your response. Sorry to be such a newbie here! Comments (1)My 2c: 1. Have you seen a Kohler porcelain sink in person, just not that specific model? In particular, have you seen the finish, etc.? 2. Have you seen an apron sink in person? 3. I know you have seen the pictures of that specific sink on the web. If the answers to #1 and #2 are "yes", I think you should have a pretty clear idea of what you would be getting, and you should not worry too much about what the other poster said: "The sink with the drain in the corner wasn't wide enough or deep enough for me." - you can judge those aspects based on any sink with similar dimensions to the Whitehaven, and a lot of folks here seem to love sinks that are about the size of the Whiehaven....See Morenikthegreek
