I've been living with a total crap kitchen for so long, I'm just going to be in heaven--this kitchen has tons of counter space.

With a name like "raenjapan" I assume you're living in Japan. I've seen first hand how small many kitchens are in Japan when I traveled there on a three week Fulbright Memorial Fund trip a few years ago. The family in whose home I stayed had a kitchen that was so tiny and when we sat down to eat (at a table, not on the floor) there was no need to get up to get anything off the counter because it was within arm's reach. : )

You are not alone. I have moved many, many times and on
two different moves I had to move to a home I had never
seen before. My DH has excellent taste and was more
concerned with location, location, location so I had to
endure a few ugly kitchens. The good news is you can
always fix them up.

Maine is a wonderful state. If you are close to the
coast you will adore sailing around Boothbay Harbor, Wells
beach and Cape Elizabeth. If you are in the mountains
the skiing is fantastic at SundayRiver. And the lakes
region is a peaceful place. I am told by my younger
sister (whose inlaws go there) Moosehead Lake is out
of a book. Perfectly pristine. Clean waters and peaceful
loons singing to everyone.

Anyway, try not to be too sad about Maine.
Sometimes moving is a new adventure. Enjoy the ride.

I LOVE the red cabinets and hickory(?) floor!!

I'm guessing the OTR is there because they are popular unless the buyer is TKO. Nearly every new house I looked at here in mid/northeast CT in the 400-700k price range had a huge kitchen with an OTR, and Maine isn't exactly known for being on the cutting edge. That's part of its charm!

Congratulations! It looks like it has great bones and a few cosmetic tweaks can make it yours. After buying 4 houses in the past 13 years, my advice is to paint if you can't tolerate the color and then live in it for at least a year before making any major changes. Unless, of course, something is broken. Living in the space will help you determine how you use it, store your stuff, etc.

Like em or not, OTR MW's are most common here to, even in houses costing $700,000.

That's a charming kitchen! I like the red cabinets, and the wood floor. Yes, I too would change out the OTR MW to a hood if there is outside venting, but maybe there's not. If I were going to make just one change though, it would be the countertops. Soapstone counters would go beautifully in a New England house, and would look nice with the red cabinets.

Just out of curiosity have you looked up the address on Google earth or Google maps? You can see so much about the landscape, street and nearby homes. (Depending on the area - some areas don't have the "street view.") I'm just curious because we've never bought a house without a visit, although we have friends who have.

I love the color of the cabs especially since I did barn red cabs. I see some really nice details like inset cabs, 6 panel doors, butted trim and done the really old fashion way with the top piece slightly longer than the side trim. The pendants over the peninsula are really interesting. Copper? Leather? Good luck with your move and I hope you love Maine. New England is a great place to live.

It looks like a great space with a lot of potential. Would love to know more about those pendants, too.

I also moved a lot and purchased two homes based on photos only. This was before internet and both worked out beautifully. I currently live in and love the second one we bought that way over 15 years ago. New England is a great place to live, we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thanks everyone! We're really, really excited about the move. The house is right over the NH border and about 30 min. to portsmouth. My husband and I are really "outdoorsy" and the area sounds perfect.

We were in Japan for 4 years, and yes, their kitchens are awful. I LOVE to cook, and it was a challenge to say the least to cook in that tiny, badly-laid-out kitchen.

The OTR micro will be going, and we'll install an outside vent if there isn't already one (it's an exterior wall). I like the colors of the cabinets and floors, so that will stay, but definitely new counters. I'm not sure what yet...I kind of picture something lighter, like a light granite or maybe copper or zinc. We're very much DIYers, and might do concrete (we've done it before). We'll also pull out the fridge surround so that it actually covers the sides of the fridge. I'd like to change out the appliances for stainless, but it isn't a priority and might not happen.

Also, maybe new hardware on the cabs? Like nickle cup pulls for the drawers, etc?

Overall, the house is very well built and spacious, and we can tone down the country without too much trouble. Those pendents are leather, and will be changed out for something more like this:

Actually, most of the lighting has a moose motif, and will be changed. The challenge will be keeping true to the style of the house and still giving it a more modern sensibility.

My style is more fun/eclectic/bright than this house, with white trim, but I'm going to keep the stained because it's well-done and there's a ton of it. We'll only be there a few years, so I can't make it too wacky. :-)

Once we get there and get a better idea of how it reads in person, I'll get more photos up and get some advice on how to proceed with the de-moosing of the house.

A fun town, at least 20 years ago it was. They have
great places to eat, and it is close to the beaches.
Visit Odiorne State Park, Wentworth by the Sea, Strawberry
Banke, (a historical place) Prescott in the park, Prescott
Gardens, Rosa's bikers bar, The Ferry Landing, Friendly
Toast, a bunch of fun little shops one called Marco Polo.
I love that place. There are also some great bike trips
along to newington and on to Rye. Visit New Castle and
you will just die over the cute million dollar cottages.
Rent a sail boat, sea kayak or canoe and tool around
the coast villages. You will feel like an explorer.

And take a trip down the coast to see Fuller Gardens
or the Mansions of North Hampton. All fun to explore on
a bike.

And best of all you are near Warren's Lobster house.
In Kittery of course. Ohhhhh the outlets.
Okay this is one of those favorite Grandma kind of places
but trust my your relatives will enjoy their lobster
at Warrens after a day of holiday shopping.

And... Yes there is more. You are only 45 min north
of Boston, And the North Shore. You will love the North
end for great gourmet shops. Bring home some fresh
fish and cook it in that beautiful red kitchen of yours.

Enjoy Maine and NH. A wonderful place to play when you
don't have to work.
