worried about myself-decorating style all over the place-just me?
Comments (11)Thank you for the responses. I re-read my post, sounds a bit rambling. I just finished looking at an Elle Decor, then going into a Marshall's Homegoods...and feeling overwhelmed. Fortunately I *LOVE* eclectic style. I like quirky, and I already know that I don't want my home to look like a builders model or that every room look like it was decorated from the same store. That being said...I have seen some pictures of "eclectic" that pretty much look like "crazy" so I am just wary of that. hilltop-yes, I can see you get what I am feeling! I like that quote about having anything, just not everything. So true, and I will try to remember that. forhgtv-For some reason, I feel very strongly that the exterior of a house should be somewhat continued inside...and I am not sure why I feel this way? I guess because I do feel strongly about it...I should roll with it and not fight it. I do like my house exterior, so that's a plus. I do agree about my friends'houses. You know that feeling after having your first glass of wine, and everyone is talking and laughing and the kids are playing outside...and you notice some quirky piece of art or furniture...or how the light of the sunset changes the hue of the wall paint...or how the sleek stainless steel bowl of chips looks so cool against the rough, rustic wood table. THAT'S the feeling I want people to get in *MY* house...although I know it has more to do with the good company (and good wine, LOL) than anything else. cear-yes, I am trying to do that. You know, as depressing as this is...I think being on a tight budget makes it difficult, too. I saw a piece of artwork that i loved...and considered it for our dining room. It was $400 and while that is not much for artwork for some people...it is a lot of $$$ when I don't have much of anything else in the dining room. I am afraid that even though I love this piece of art...now I am locked into that color scheme/style...and I still have not done window treatments, or gotten an area rug etc. I just don't know what to start with, and if money was not such a big issue, I could say, "Well, if this piece of art doesn't work in here, I'll get something else." I am scared to commit. But sheesh...i gotta start somewhere, and I know this! Ok, I am afraid I am rambling again. I am glad to hear the word "eclectic" tossed around, because that is the direction I am leaning towards anyway. Thanks again....See MoreIs glazing stained cabinets going out of style?
Comments (2)We still sell a ton of glazed cabinetry, painted and stained. Glazes over stains outsell stains alone by 10% or so. I think the right combination of glaze/stain can really make the wood look rich and, more importantly (to me), it adds a level of 'relief' to the kitchen. In other words, the kitchen looks less one dimensional as the glaze does a great job of giving the cabinetry depth and texture. I think for that reason alone, and because it allows a designer to pull in other color elements in the job (a black glaze can pull in the black counters or black handles), glazes are not a trend that will go away any time soon. Just my opinion though!...See MoreHate is a strong word regarding decor but
Comments (10)I guess what irritated me weren't trends mentioned-this buzz is allover, "this in!" "This out!" One gets used to it and maybe somebody can get encouraged by it or to learn something new(not that I found there anything new though) or be amused by it or otherwise just do a bit of time structuring ..like I was trying to do. Also can be helpful on occassion. I also love many things regardless whether they're trends or not, including high gloss and wallpaper. and it's a bit unclear to me why they're made it sound so unexpectedly new but whatever. now what made me upset was this heavy stress on obtaining stuff that photographs well.. "“Just because something is discounted or was given to you by family or friends, that doesn’t mean it’s a fit for your home."-true "So, reminding yourself of the idea that everything could be a photo opp will help you narrow down a design that’s right for you and your space.” It might. But it does treat vast majority of readers like, sorry, idiots, who wouldn't be able to connect to something personal, beautiful, unique, whatever, without thinking first "But how it will look on my Instagram" they say it's democratizing design, as far as I understood no it's not. They're not making sources of knowledge or resources available to people. Not in this message. They don't really encourage them, they don't really educate them, they don't really inspire them. They reduce them. By telling people this particular "why" on how they should elevate their decor they somehow just reduced them. That takes special skill I believe-to spin things in such a way that you take uniqueness out of unique and claim you did the opposite. Or..maybe they themselves miss the mark so to say, and don't even notice. That's a second possibility. I don't know which is sadder. I would be less upset if I didn't read for years how inspiring they were before....See MoreAre white cabinets going out of style?
Comments (21)I do not think they are dated per say, but I and many others have become bored with the ubiquitous white, subway, marble and island open formula. In most shelter rags today only one out of ten kitchens lately is following that formula which implies they are no longer the hot new trend which is to say that yes they falling out of style presently with design houses who are responsible for trends. In high market Green Demolition centers many very high end white kitchens have been ripped out and are on offer for pennies. Even Christopher peacock is using alternatives now. this said if your heart desires a white kitchen how I or any one else feels about them should not matter. Even if you are doing it for resale I am sure it will not break a sale of a properly priced house but it will no longer be a universal selling point and you will not regain your investment with any choices so again do what you like....See Morerob333 (zone 7b)
