Database program for recording Leps?
Comments (4)Aside from a simple database, IMO anybody who gets serious at all about Lepidoptera ought to be keeping a journal (field, rearing, etc). Catch the moment sort of thing (rather than from memory later), with impressions about what you see and questions you want to pursue answers to. Notes about habitat, weather, plant or Lep charcteristics or associations for example - or hunreds of other things that you will want to remember years later. Drawings also add alot to them, help with determinations and if you're a resercher out in the wilds like I was (not just your back yard) then simple maps or GPS coordinates are also a plus to find that same patch of earth again if you choose to. Your journals would be invauable to you later to refer back to, and over time will contain a massive account of your knowledge gained. I have my journals going back over four decades that can always be refered to as the old memory fades. Mine can be quite enjoyable to just leaf through and remember all those experiences, the new discoveries made, new people and new places that Lepidoptera took me and my family to. Same with my synoptic collection... looking at a specimen and reading its label often reminds me of not only the circumstances, but often actually collecting the specimen. Computers are fine as far as they go, but a journal can be carried with you anywhere you are and become the story of your lifes work with Lepidoptera. FWIW Larry...See MoreRecording programs
Comments (5)Hi Bus Driver, Without knowing how much money you wanted to throw at this, I kept my answer simple. Yes, DVD recorders with built-in ATSC/NTSC tuners & timers are readily available. I took a quick look at Walmart's website, since they are so ubiquitous, and they actually have an even better solution... which is what I was initially going to recommend. Under DVD players, in "electronics" they have a Magnavox DVD recorder that also has a built-in HD (hard drive) recorder. Without knowing all the details of this unit, it should hopefully allow you to record the program to the HD and then edit out the commercials as you burn it to DVD, if you wish. The Magnavox name is licensed to Funai which is a major OEM supplier to many well known manufactures, so it should be OK. Regarding Tivo, yes that is an alternative but it only has a HD recorder so that you would then use a separate DVD recorder to archive. You also have a subscription fee, as well. Not knocking Tivo at all though. Hope this helps! Bill...See MoreDoes anyone have a recommendation for online driving school?
Comments (4)I don't know where you live, Drew...but almost every State recognizes AARP's driver safety program/driving course. Check out their site in the link below and see if it will satisfy your needs. Sorry 'bout your ticket. I received one...the only one of my entire driving career...over 35 years ago...for sliding through a stop sign on an icy street just about this time of year. I was furious with the local police. They were going off duty and decided to ticket me at 7:00 AM because they'd had a slow night. So...I know how you're feeling right about now. I should have contested mine but I was too busy to spare the time away from work and I let it go. Comments (26)My son who is entering 9th grade next year & my daughter, who is soon to enter 10th grade, are both homeschooled. If your child plans to attend a 4 year university right away after HS, as parent, it is your job to do a little investigating. In the HS years they should take all the college prep classes that the colleges require. For example for CAL States: Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, 2 years of science with a lab, 4 yrs English, 2 years Foreign Language, 3 years of History, etc. Then you as the parent should put together a high school transcript documenting all these courses & years of study. Your student should take the SAT or ACT. Then with a parent issued diploma, they can apply for university. The Cal States state that homeschooled highschoolers can be admitted on the same grounds as traditionally schooled students. Which means they must have completed all necessary prep classes with a high enough GPA and score high enough on the SAT. Now if your homeschooler does not plan to attend 4 yr college right away (just like many public schooled kids) you can forgoe the SAT prep and some of the college prep classes in HS. Many kids in public school do not take the college prep route and plan to attend a community college before transferring to a 4 year & this route is fine for a homeschooler too. In the end both routes end with a 4 yr degree. Community college courses are just as rigourous as 4 yr college classes and transfer students do just as well as those who started at university from the start. There are some benefits to attending community college first as well. It is less expensive. It also gives kids two extra years to really plan what career path they are going to take and to choose the correct university. It is a great option & definitely not a "backdoor" way into college as others have so rudely and wrongly called it. There are plenty of people who are accepted into great 4 year universities every year and yet choose to go the community college route for a variety of reasons. The mother of your neice sounds like she just misplanned a little. She should have prepared a HS transcript & made sure her daughter was taking collge prep classes. But it's not too late to construct a transcript and then she can choose one of two options: 1) complete the missing college prep classes at home & add them to the transcript, take the SAT & apply OR 2) go directly to community college and begin the next level of her education right away. It's not a big deal at all and is exactly what many public schools kids with public school diplomas do! They will place her in the correct classes for her level as far as English & Math and she can begin enrolling in the classes she'll need for a nursing major. After successfully completing her 2 yrs of community college work she can transfer to the nursing school that is right for her, provided she does well, and from what you say about her, I'm sure she will. Also remember that 3/4 of homeschoolers go on to college. That number is higher than what public schools can boast....See Morejustgotabme
