'Julia Child' Rose Paired with Dk. Purple Salvia
Comments (19)Salvia tend to like it drier than water-thirsty roses. Watering 2 days a week (depends how long you're watering and how much volume if you're on a drip) sounds fine for the roses, as you're near the coast. Plenty of water especially for now. But, that being said, with certain established roses, like Julia Child, they can get by nicely will less water than other roses. And some salvia can stand more water than other varieties. So, I was trying to find a salvia that didn't mind being wee bit wetter than they probably naturally like that was that deep bluish purple. It's the salvia I was more worried about, as I was going to have to water for the roses. I ended up ordering 4 different varieties and will simply make the decision when they arrive, and plant the rest in my yard in other places, since I (and the hummers) love salvia :-) Patty S....See MoreJulia child.. will this one survive?
Comments (10)Congratulations on restoring your Julia Child! It looks the picture of health. If you have a place to store her properly over winter I believe she would do better if planted next spring....avoiding any possible negative outside winter events beyond your control if she was planted now. Are roses of her size and winter hardiness normally planted outside now, and successfully survive winter with no harm where you garden in the Pacific North West? If yes, do it now. If not, wait until spring. The main issue is successfully wintering her over with the least harm done, in the ground or in an unheated garage or the like. Which works best, do it. You would hate for all your work with her being overturned. I would, too! Moses...See MoreJulia Child Rose is so good in many ways
Comments (27)Diane, every time I see your Twilight Zone, I think I MUST get another one and stop hoping this stunted one will fill out, and why do I think I have to stop at one, for pete's sake. So, Twilight Zone(s) is on my list for spring. I won't have any trouble getting it. The Rosarium always has it, and she's been selling more 3,and 5 gal sizes, so I might be able to get a big one. Love Song brought me to my knees, but she no longer taunts me. I have put her out of my mind. That's a lie. I'm sure I'll try her again one of these days. Maybe if Straw can come up with a recipe for a planting medium and lead me step by step. Your Julias are so massive and seem normal to you, and here I am thrilled to the core that mine is 1' tall and blooming. Not sure my heart could take seeing yours in person....See MoreJulia Child rose...not impressed. Am I alone?
Comments (34)I recall `Christian Bedard saying Julia Child is THE ideal rose that he aims for in his hybridizing work .I agree this rose has so many vitues: Heavy flowering, great repeat, tidy plant, good fragrance, I think its greatest attribute is that the whole plant looks good…dense rounded shape, flowers all over. I personally prefer more a HT type rose than a floribunda, but no doubt Julia Child is a top notch variety, and yes the ideal floribunda. A few decades ago yellow roses were largely considered the weakest color , if you grew an older yellow like Bucaneer or Eclipse you’d know it was no match for the best pink and red roses. It’s great how far yellow roses have come and that this one can easily contend for best in class....See Moreseil zone 6b MI
