Thermador vs. Jennair with V2 vs. Dacor Discovery Double Wall Ovens

Any suggestions? Can't seem to decide at all. We will be going with an induction cooktop with a bridge feature. Thanks!

First, what has led you to consider these three ovens?

I am not a big fan of the Dacor Discovery. I had the range and the wall oven and they did make improvements since I had mine but there are still reasons I would not buy. Read the use and care manual of any oven you are considering because it may have little quirks that you may or may not consider important.

One thing is that this oven has a very intense preheat. You cannot put food in until the oven is preheated per the manual. After the oven preheats, it goes to a maintenance mode that oscillates the element on and off. In theory this is to keep a very even temperature but if you open the oven frequently or put a big load of cold food, you can trigger the fast preheat again so you have to take your food back out. If the preheat does not come back on the temperature can drift down about 5OF because it continues to oscillate to "maintain". Most ovens would only allow about 25F swing on either side of the set temperature and many ovens now only allow 5-10F swing. This may also preclude a delay bake in some ovens designed like this or in some the delay bake stops the fast preheat and then it can take 45 minutes to come to temperature using the maintenance cycling which might not be a very good thing. They talk about being able to control the oven with your phone but if it has to preheat, who is there to take the food in and out? My current oven has a fast preheat that is optional but even if you use it, you can still put some foods in without burning. For any baking of cakes, etc, you need to preheat any oven for at least 20-30 minutes after the oven indicates it is at temperature so that it can stabilize.

"The preheat cycle rapidly brings the oven chamber up to the proper cooking temperature. Wait for the oven to finish preheating (Insert Food appears on the display) before placing the food in the oven. Excessive browning will occur if you put the food in the oven while it is preheating."

"If you increase the temperature by more than 50°F (28°C), to reach the new temperature, the oven needs to preheat. Remove the food from the oven to prevent excessive browning." The same would occur if you allow the heat to drop by 50F by opening the door frequently as in cookie baking.

A couple other things would be that there are vent holes on the inside of the door facing up that are positioned so that crude can easily get into those holes pulling food in and out. See page 7. I did not like the lighting at all. It was too dark. The Dacor wall oven I had put out much more heat than the one I have now.

Thermador (and their sister Bosch) also has several big openings at the top of the inside of the door; many people report having had problems with spills going in these holes, running down in between the glass, and leaving extremely difficult to clean messes on the glass.

I've had no trouble with my Thermador 6 burner stove. It's 13 years old. We are now into the 2nd week of a major remodel of the kitchen knocking out the old mudroom laundry room to make a bigger kitchen. I will keep the Thermador. I am looking at an ASKO Dishwasher. I had nixed the Miele because I want to throw silverware into the DW. But if Gary is right, then I could reconsider the Miele. It looked like the ASKO has the silverware tray on top too but without the annoying slotted utensil tray. (The difference seems to be the difference between Rome's airport and Frankfort). I want an all refrigerator column so I am looking at the Thermador. I have a full freezer in our shed 10 feet away from the kitchen . (We are cattle ranchers). So all I need inside is an ice cube maker for my smoothies. But maybe a small freezer drawer for frozen fruit for said smoothies, a couple frozen pizzas, and of course the Ketel One Vodka. (No more kids at home). Could put the 18" Thermador freezer someplace though. Other columns are Lebherr, Viking. So advice on columns? And what about beverage centers? I looked at Marvel and Viking. Yikes. My biggest problem is a separate convection/microwave. Every 10 years, it seems, we are warned of the dangers of microwaves and cancer. Is a combo convection microwave good for making that extra dish for Thanksgiving and parties? Politically I'm trying to buy as much American and local as I can (local guy making our stainless steel sink), but the next best thing are European manufacturers who have union workers who make decent salaries, not slave labor. I have to decide by tomorrow and I'm still a tad confused.

What you didn't say was why you were set on the Jenn-Air to start with; only what drew you to the Thermador. Definitely compare notes on whether each one gives you what you're looking for in a wall oven. If they're similarly priced and both have all the features you need/desire, then I would search reviews for both on GW as well as other sites like epinions, consumer reports, etc. and then make my decision. Make sure to check the ovens out in person to compare what you see about physical quality & workmanship. I haven't read alot of good about the Jenn-Air appliances on GW (alhtough they look really nice in photos), but I also wasn't looking at a 27" wall oven. On the flip side, my mom has a Thermador 30" double wall oven and has had a few minor problems that have turned into major headaches until they were fixed. Does she love the way the food turns out from that oven? YES!! Would she trade it if given a chance? No way!! (but she would have vented it to the outside vs. having those darn fans run for what seems like hours after use.) Bottom line, do your homework beyond the usable interior space & choose the one that best fits your needs and (based on reviews) will give you the least hassle down the road. Good luck!

Good luck with yours theanimala. I'm with you on the regular Electrolux over the Icon. To correct some of my earlier comments, I looked at the regular Electrolux again at Lowes last night. It does have a grill below the control panel that vents directly out into the room and there are vent holes at the top and bottom of the door that apparently draw air from the kitchen down between the door panels and out the bottom. I guess this is to keep the door cool??? Then I went to look at the other ovens on display. All have some venting at the top but many are smaller than the one on the Electrolux and some have small louvers to direct it up or down. Most of the ovens, including my Dacor, also have slots above the oven box (between the broiler and the control panel) that line up with slots in the section of the door when the door is closed. It looks like the air flows from above the oven box, then down between the door panels and out the bottom. Does anyone know if there's a major difference in functionality between the two methods? I'm pretty much sold on the regular Electrolux as long as it doesn't make the kitchen significantly hotter than other models. As to my concern about the continuous gap between the glass panels on the Icon door, I had to laugh when I justlooked at my Dacor oven and it had the exact same thing. ALL the ovens have vents, thus the ability to get gunk between the layers of glass but this does give a little easier access. I guess reading a post about someone getting gunk between the glass of their brand new Meile made me a little paranoid. OTOH, the glass on my oven door is black so you wouldn't be able to see any gunk between the panels anyway. I'd still be a little nervous about all that open access to glass on the Icon.

Welcome Heather, In real life, you won't have much,if any, beeping. Don't lock the controls. That is silly and a cya reaction to your question. I have Bosch but believe there won't be any appreciable difference. The guts are made by the same ppl. Convection in both ovens is more important, useful, than flex induction. Here's my experience. Pots of all sizes work on all hobs, except possibly for those that might be too small. It still works if the pot is not centered on the hob. My pots are sometimes off center and partly off the hob and it still works and works exceptionally well . If it works, it works well. I have taken pots off the hob to add water under the faucet and it works again when I place it back on the hob. Granted my faucet is just a swivel away. Flex sounds so appealing but it just is not necessary unless, possibly, if you want to bridge something, say a huge roaster. And even then I am not sure you cannot monkey with something. At our cottage, with a gas/stove, I might move a pan partially off to control heat and that's monkeying in my book. I use the convection feature in my double oven Bosch for cookies and breads which is about all I bake. So I would not trade double convection for what I see as an unnecessary but sexy sounding flex. Couple of things re induction to help with the learning curve. Rest your finger and don't press. And, use boost to attain aboil, not to maintain a boil. Don't worry or even think about power sharing.

We never had that problem with Bosch double ovens but the circuit board overheats if you use both ovens. It was replaced to no avail. Why buy a double oven if you cannot cook with both at one time?
