Landscape Design Forum FAQ - Improved
Comments (7)While I think that the "FAQ" as outlined by swanoir was presented tongue in cheek ('the humus'), many of the subsequent comments and/or links to threads that could/should be included in a FAQ were presented in a more serious tone. And maybe they do make sense as a foundation to a real LD forum FAQ. But I've also sensed something else in these comments that may contribute to the apparent lack of communication between new posters seeking advice and those that regularly frequent this forum and offer it. And that is that the long checklist provided by Miss R must be (or should be) answered in detail before posting. Well, of course not! But it is definitely something worth reviewing and giving some thought to. This checklist, or something very similar, is what most designers utilize when first meeting with a prospective client. It gives them a feeling for what the client wants to do with the property, how they intend to use it, what they hope to get out of it and how much effort (time/$$) are they are intending to put into it. Hopefully, reviewing an outline or checklist such as this could help to refine and focus some of those blank slate questions and even educate those new posters totally unfamiliar with the process the degree of complexity, the number of variables and exactly what is involved in the formulation of a landscape design. Even DIY landscape texts intended for the homeowner with no previous design or landscaping experience offer similar checklists to get one started thinking about the process. Obviously, this is overkill for those questions that are more issue-specific, but I think very appropriate for those that are much broader and far less focused....See MoreLandscaper botched sod installation, how to fix?
Comments (9)The guy is not a landscaper - he's an opportunist. I would report him to any and all better business bureau type lists you have in town. If your state has licensing requirements, find his license number on his truck or your invoice and report him to the state agency that issues and reissues the licenses. 20 years experience is measured in many ways. Sounds like he has 1 years experience, twenty times...if that. He does have 20 years experience getting paid, though. That is evident in his knowledge of the written contract and with threats. You might try to negotiate with him. Make him understand that unless he makes this right, you will report him to every BBB list (there are some Internet based lists, too). What he needs to do will be very costly to him. He should remove the turf (and use it somewhere else immediately), level the soil surface, roll it down, relevel the surface, water it down, relevel the surface, roll it, relevel, roll it again, and then sod with a final rolling. I would not expect him to agree to anything like that. He will offer to roll it down but that won't fix it. What you might get him to agree to is lifting the sod, leveling with a drag, relaying the sod, and THEN rolling the grass down. That is what I would expect from a budget guy who tilled the soil before laying the sod. You might have to pay him more, but you really should have gone with someone else (probably more expensive) the first time. And you are correct in that it will be bumpy again as time goes on. In a way you would be much MUCH better off if he did repossess the sod. Then you could start over. But that timing sure sucks for the Derby....See Morehow wet will the floor get without a door
Comments (2)If you want it open, you can do it, but I'll give you my best ideas based upon my experiences. I travel a lot, so I think I've seen pretty much everything out there that there is to see. That's good and bad. lol I've showered in a lot of tubs without curtains or screen of any kind. If you go that route and you want to minimize water overspray I recommend: 1) making the room a wet room. You don't necessarily need a floor drain, but at least have a membrane under the tile for the inevitable messy shower taken by you or a guest. Typical for me would be Ditra on the floor with Kerdi on the seams, but there are other ways too. 2) The best way to shower with the least amount of overspray is to use a handheld. Hold it in your hand while you wet yourself down, then set it aside while you lather/shampoo, then hand hold it again to rinse yourself off. 3) opinion: I hate with a passion the hinged shower screens. Hate hate hate. If they were effective that'd be one thing. So moving on... 4) Yes, they do make bi-fold shower doors. I'd recommend: no screen/glass at all but with membrane on the floor under the tile. See how it works. If you can do that without significant splash out, then there you go. If you need an enclosure, your splash patterns will tell you where you need it and how much of it you need. When you build, add framing/blocking in the walls where you think your glass enclosure might be hinged or attached to the wall, just in case you have to go that route....See MoreHow install new return port in underground pool without leaks.
